A quick question:

I got a set of Destination A/T's installed today on my KJ. The mechanic told me that the front pads were worn down to the metal, but just on the inside of the tires. He said that the calipers needed replaced, because they were not holding the pads correctly.

I am feeling a vibration in my brake pedal, would the lack of brake pad be causing this? Or is that vibration also caused by bad rotors?

Thanks for your opinion and advice.

Derek

Odds are the brake pedal vibration is actually caused by warped rotors.

If the pads are down to the metal, you will start to see your rims turn yellow and there will be a lot of grinding going on when you hit the brakes.

I would get new brakes on your KJ ASAP!

As for the calipers, odds are that the slider pins just need a good cleaning or at worst replaced. Replacing calipers is something that is only done when the piston is leaking or won't return to its "home" position.

If you do your own brakes and you can't compress the piston, you need a new caliper. Believe it or not, the remanned ones at Napa aren't all that expensive (like $50) and they have a lifetime warranty on them.

I just went through this exact thing on my KJ, replaced a bad caliper. Wisdom says you should do them in pairs, but the pocketbook said I could only do one. I did get new rotors because the outer pad on the wheel with the bad caliper was worn to metal. Sounded like the blue angels were flying over everytime I hit the brakes.
