| Post subject: | Mopar Transmission & Transfer Skids - KJ 2003 CRD - fitting |
Hi, I have bought Mopar skid plates for the Transmission & Transfer, but I have a problem. My problem is that they are new from Jeep and that they will most probably be for a 2005 model onwards, my KJ is a 2003, so as per the “Armor Thread” I need to make some holes so that I can attach the correctly. Can you help? Does anyone know where exactly I should make the hole before I attempt to fit them to the KJ. Photos will help a lot. Thank you, Fil.

You bought a mopar auto tranny skid for a manual tranny? Hope that fits mate... Btw, you are in the wrong section...CRD's have their own little corner of LOST: viewforum.php?f=5 The only thing that changed between 02 and 05 is the position of a bolt on the subframe. |

Hi, I bought Manual, sorry i should have said. "The only thing that changed between 02 and 05 is the position of a bolt on the subframe." This requires making a new hole on the skid to attach it to the subframe, where do I need to make the hole on the skip plate? Thank you for the information. Fil. |

Hang on, I am looking for some pics, I have seen a bunch not so long ago, now if I could find them... Didn't know Mopar made a manual tranny skid...I think there is only one skid. Anyway, you need to make an new hole in the subframe..not in the skid. |

So, I have an 'o7 Manual. I didn't know they made two different transmission skid plates? Or did I read the posts incorrectly? I bought it from Jparts, and it fits my Jeep perfect. |

Sorry, I might have not been clear, my KJ is manual, the Skid plates are both original Mopar ( I think there is no difference for Auto & Manual). I am actually trying to find out as I have read in some treads that I must do an addition hole to attach the transfer skip to my 2003 as what I have bought are now for 2005+ and have a different hole positioning. Any help? photos please. Sorry if I confused every one Fil. |

Yes, there's just one transmission skid, auto or manual makes no difference. I think what you need to do is mount up the skid plate with the holes that DO fit. Then you drill where the hole isn't. The transfer case skid should be no drilling if it comes with threaded inserts. If not you'll need to drill though the crossmember. |

Hi, So I finally got round today to fitting my Skid plates back onto my KJ!!! First I also took my front one off, cleaned it, zinc coated it and with the new Transmition & Transfer ones had them all Powder coated Yellow ( It’s London Underground Yellow, I couldn’t US School Bus Yellow –I am in the UK) !!! ![]() First things first: Putting back the Front Skid plate back was easy, not problem, went back one in one hit. Transmition Skid ( Mopar Part N: 8221003) - Big problem. Looks like as this is Mopar I thought it would fit a 2002 – 2008 without a problem, but it doesn’t, I understood I needed to drill and extra hole and it would fit without a problem, it actually doesn’t and this is way: The cross bar underneath has been changed for the 2005 – 2008 model ( must be more forward or wider compared to 2002 – 2004 model) therefore the Skid is to short by about 2 inc and you can’t attach it to the correct front holes of the front Skid plate where it’s supposed to be attached. I still managed to attach it by drilling an extra hole in the plate and attach it to the correct hole on the 2003 cross bar at the back (see red circle), but at the front it’s wedged under the front skid plate until I find a better way of securing in it. ![]() Transfer Skid ( Mopar Part N: 82209455) – No problem. The hole fit without a problem but you need to drill and extra hole as I did on the cross bar of a 2002-2004 model as it’s missing (see blue circle). The Skid plate come with four holes to attach it and to make it extra safe I drilled the hole ( as more than you member points out, you don’t own your Jeep until you put a Hole into in, I guess I now DO!! ) and attached it correctly. At this stage If I have known the Transmission Skid for the 2005-2008 was going to turn out 2 inc shorter I wouldn't have bought it, so lesson here for anyone with a 2002-2004 model, it won't fit proparly and it will need adjusting.... so if any one in the UK need one for a 2005 - 2008 KJ and doesn't mind it being Yellow make me an offer and I will go a try and find one that fits or have one made.... Hope this helps and if someone whats to see more photos of the problem I will try to take more. Fil.

Saw this thread from your link in the other thread. The reason the cross member is different is because you have a different transmission than the 05+ kj's have. In 02-03(some 03) they had the 45rfe tranny with the different cross member. When they changed to the 42rle tranny they changed cross members too.. So your crd has, what looks like, the same cross member as the 02-03 kj's had with the 45rfe tranny. They didnt start using the tranny skid till 2005, so thats why it doesnt fit all year kj's the same. |

I have a 2005 US-spec CRD and got a skid from the 2002 gas (petrol) model and it bolted-up perfectly, but yes, I think Mopar is in denial that they briefly used the 45RFE in the KJ with non-diesels, and no aftermarket providers other than Asfir seem to have made one that fits right.
