there are many springs out there, and many with the same spring rates, but marketed for different applications... Example: the OME 790 springs are rated at 400-500lb/in and quite respectable in terms of reliability and performance of the spring. There is also the HyperCoil spring rated at 500lb/in, but marketed for racing applications, or track, used mainly by cars, racing cars... so, you see here, as evidenced by this example, that there are many springs available with the same "numbers", but for different applications. My questions is, can they be "cross/used"? I am only concerned with good quality springs, not cheap units. So lets say that all springs created equal, would nascar race springs rated at 500lb/in work with the KJ, if that was required for the ARB bumper with winch and large tires etc? Now, the reason I ask this, is because I have been building/designing a very aggressive suspension setup on my older VW rabbit GTI and Scirocco. I sourced some 550,500,450,400, and 350 lb/in spring sets, all made with high quality steel, not junk. I realized that I could actually consider using some of the springs for my KJ, who is in need of more suspension in front. But is this feasible? tia I forgot to add, that some 500#/in springs use thicker stock, others use less coils per given length. Given that all steel being the same quality, would one design work better for lifting a vehicle, and another design better for racing/track applications on cars? |

Well i have a somewhat understanding of what you are trying to accomplish seeing that before this i owned a 600 horse DD/track day Audi A4 and I did a full Suspension upgrade on it. But back to the springs when lifting a truck or SUV most of the lifts you will see consist of concentric springs not just a straight spring like the H&R lifts for these SUVs. Also all the springs that you have listed are for a much lighter vehical and a much lower. So i doubt it will work but if your going to put and ARB bumper on your KJ go for the Heavy springs from OME you will not be disappointed. |

First...the VW springs will be much wider then the KJ's (diameter) and so will never fit. The kj has the narrowest springs I have ever seen on a vehicle. Second...the comment about the H&R springs is not correct, they are the only progressive springs available for the KJ, OME etc are all linear springs. So, if you want a race setup, get KONI shocks and H&R springs, like Jinstall. If you want an offroad setup, get Bilstein/rancho/OME shocks and OME springs. If you can afford it the Rancho 9000 series with the myride remote would be a great start if you want a multipurpose shock setup. |

I think the biggest point missed is that there's more to the coils, or any coil, than just the #rate uncompressed and compressed coil length and intended static height have more to do with it than the simple #rate while in some weight applications, lets say a KJ/KK with no steel bumpers/winch etc, and you install coils at a certain #rate designed to give 2" lift with the extra weight, you end up with more lift than the coils were intended to give same with coils designed to ride at, lets just say 6 inches static height, designed for a vehicle that weighs 1000 lbs lighter, you end up with a 4 inch static height, just for example sake you'd have to compare the uncompressed and compressed length, intended vehicle weight or pre-load, the coil rate etc and measure the width of the coil and all that good stuff like the fella earlier said, there are some excellent coil choices, OME, BDS, JBA (JBA2.5R, i wouldn't intentionally recommend JBA25 front coils, ome or bds have better rate for the vehicle) on top of that, you may find that you'd prefer to order a set of custom coils instead, there's usually coil shops that you can order whatever you want as long as youre able to give them the information that results in the correct coil, custom rear coils boiled down to my only remaining option, ome, bds nor jba offer a coil that has the desired rate that I'm needing good luck on the hunt! |
