When in 4 wheel drive and go less than 10 MPH ...the engine seems like it strains or shifting wrong. What could it be?

Welcome to the forum!

Are you in fulltime, 4-high (part time), or 4 low when this is happening?

If this is 4low it sounds right. The tranny does some werid stuff in 4low. Thats why its best to put it into 1st or 2nd so it doesnt heat up so much.

Err, locking the transmission into 1st or 2nd is going to make it heat up more isn't it? You'd only do that to get maximum engine braking when going down hill, otherwise just let the transmission do whatever it wants, i.e. put it in D.

It could just be that you're going so slowly and therefore using such low revs that the engine's not into it's power band. If you're trying to go slow (e.g. to navigate a tricky section or something) then left foot braking's the key.

To me it sifts to much if you just leave it in D.

I would not leave it in drive. I either turn off overdrive, or put it in second. The tranny overheating is caused by the tranny shifting too much.

Long uphils (even ones that don't seem that hard) have made my KJ's trans temp light come on when in drive. KJ has the tow package ect.

Butler Peak in Big Bear CA. is notorious for this....2nd gear is easier on the trans on that hill. More than once has "i've got a trans temp light " come over the CB during our Annual BigBear run.

Good luck

if it feels like it's straining, i'd figure that's from driving on the pavement in 4wd and drivetrain bind. you shouldn't do that. also, in 4wd, you should remember that it's turning an extra driveshaft, an axle, and a pair of tires. that sucks up power.

mine never feels strained in 4wd, either high or low.

I'v only felt mine strain in 4wd if I am going through some mud in second gear and a simple downshit to first resolves this problem, I was also pushing a lot of snow (we just got 26") while traveling down this trail in second gear it bogged down again a simple downshit into first fixed that.
