Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I have a liberty sport 4x4 3.7L with the 45RFE transmission in it. It has about 84K on it.

The transmission is making a noise when it is not fully warmed up. When I put it into drive, and take off, there is no noise until it gets to just under the running temperature, then when I come to a stop, there is a grinding noise. It goes away when the jeep is fully warmed up.

It only happens when it is in gear. So if I drive up to a red light when its not totally warm, and leave it in drive as I come to a stop, there is a grinding noise. It will go away if I shift it into neutral. It happens in reverse and the other gears as well - so I am guessing it must be whatever mechanism disengages the gear while it is in drive as you come to a stop? I have no idea, and was hoping someone might be having the same problem. I have another transmission I picked up in case this one goes out, but it is a lot of work to switch them and I would rather attempt to figure out what is wrong with this one first.

I have flushed it out, and changed both filters. Made no difference. I have also replaced the transfer case, so that is not the problem.

Silly question, but have you made sure you have ENOUGH fluid in there? Strange noises that go away after it's warm sound indicative of a fluid level being just a little bit low.

Thanks for the reply.

I had a chance to let my brother listen to it (ase cert.) He thinks it is the bushing where the TC enters the Transmission. If any pressure is applied like accelerating, the noise stops as there is no pressure on the bushing. Just have to see how long it lasts.

Fluid is topped up. I check it when warm and it looks good.

Well, that's a lot better than a problem with your main shaft on the engine side...and a lot cheaper to fix.

Hope it stays in one piece for you for a little while longer.

Im having a similar noise. Kind of a grinding or growling when i take my foot off the gas. I thought it may be in the front end, wheel bearings or diff. Please post when you find out exactly whats going on. Thanks

Congratulations you have a bad CV joint. I had the same exact thing earlier...well later last year, lol. I could really hear it when I was under a bridge or next to a concrete wall on the highway. The CV is just in front of your transfer case. You will need to order a new CV, a 8mm...or was it a 6mm...socket and about 1 hour to swap it out. Not too bad...the worst thing I had to do was get it around the drivers side cat/exhaust. Otherwise piece of cake.

It is only $70 plus shipping so figure around 80-85 and an hour of work. If you take it in to the dealer well...make sure you take some lube and perhaps a inflatable cushion for your butt :ROTFL:

that TC bearing, if it's anything like the two ford TC bearings I had turn loose and several others that were brought to me, will have a very good possibility of knocking the seal out and puking out all of your transmission fluid if it turns loose

it's a cheap part, bearing and seal shouldn't cost ya much over 15 bucks together

if it's a whirring type of grinding noise you may be right, they'll make a similar noise as a clutch throwout bearing going bad and they tend to not last long once you start hearing them

if you suspect it's the cv(s) pull them out and drive it and see if it still does it, but i'm leaning quite a bit more towards your brothers diagnosis by your description

have you noticed any seepage from the tranny? the seal leaking some may be the cause of the cease of the noise

This sounds very familiar. I noticed it last winter, but it went away when the temps warmed up. Now it's back. Rankin, please post back when you know what the problem is so I know which direction to go with repairs.

Took the Jeep to the local CJD Dealer. Of course the noise was not present when the tech drove it. So I picked it up. On my way home from work tonight the noise was prevalent. Luckily I drive right past the dealer on my way home! The tech was able to replicate the noise. He put it up on the lift, and with a little help from half the service department, was able to tell me that it is my exhaust pipe banging against my tranny skid. When I put the skid on 3-4 years ago there was plenty of room between the 2. Apparently I bent the skid just enough so that it can come in contact with the exhaust pipe. And it was all free. Thanks Performance CJD for staying open until 12:30am to help us poor suckers who have to work while everyone else is enjoying dinner with their families!
