Pretty sure a service is called for at 60,000 miles but I don't have my owner's manual handy. Can somebody confirm?

Thanks.

I change mine every 15K with the Differentials, you can go 30K if your not wheelin' it through mud and water but that's not the case for me! It only takes 3 or 4 pints depending on which you have Command Trak or Select Trak the later taking the most. Of course it's ATF 4. Joe 8)

as a related question....the earilier KJs had the 45rfe....my '04 has the 42rle transmission....my service requires ATF+4 transmission fluid for the transmission and the nv231 transfer case....

did the earlier 45rfe use ATF+4 or ATF+3 fluid?....if it used the +3, did the earlier command-trac transfer case use that same fluid also?....in other words, can I service my transfer case with ATF+3?....I'm waiting too long for valvoline to market the +4 fluid....

I have ATF +3 in mine, only because I have a supply of it on-hand.

There are no clutches in it; I don't believe the fluid is critical. I don't believe a manual gearbox is particular about the type of ATF it is fed.

The ATF4 is synthetic not sure on the ATF3, you can get it at the dealer lists for $4.10 mine sold it to lme for $3.69, you need 7 quarts to do Transmission and transfer case if it's a 42RLE trans. I wouldn't put the wrong stuff in to save $7.00.(only an opinion) Joe

thanks fellas....

I was just kinda wondering if the 231 command-trac was the same unit throughout the years and therefore could use something different than the transmission...

I plan to purchase the ATF+4 from the dealer shortly for service to both the transmission and transfer case....

Yep, 60K...that's what I was thinking. I'm changing mine at 40k just cause 60 seems excessive. Keep doing your diffs every 12k though...
