Well I think my drive shaft is starting on its way out. On a straight stretch offroad downhill in low range I can hear it binding once and a while and it isn't corner related. I have 188 000 km on the odo so I think it is done. Is the shaft the same length as if I had a command trac case.

probably - but I'm not sure
FYI - driveshafts normally fail because the rubber boot is torn and the grease is gone - so inspect it and see - there's a replacement bearing/boot if that 's it.

Yea the boots are in decent shape but some good play (up and down) at the cv's. I am pretty sure it is the problem but have been wrong before. Did the half shafts last year so ruled them out. What is the normal mileage people are getting out of a front drive shaft?

It should have some play in it. I replaced my first one around 105,000 miles. And my daughters 02 went out at 120,000 miles. Both of them had a wore out rear boot.

if anyone else has an idea about the bind while in 4 lo while going downhill in 1st gear and wants to take a crack at it be my guest because the boot on my shaft isn't ripped and I was suspecting that might be it but if the boot is good maybe someone else will chime in. I want to figure this binding out, it is a little rough to say the least.

Go ahead and take the front shaft out. Not a bad job and if it is the CV's on the shaft removing it should eliminate the sound. A good diagnostic and you can run fine without the front driveshaft in place 'til you get it fixed.
