Post subject:  Cool new feature, total passenger side axle disconnect...

My 2003 KJ started having trouble climbing up rocks on the trail today. Then the comment was made by a spotter that my driver's side wheel was turning while the pass side was still. Since I have a front locker, that couldn't be normal. I Hi-Jacked it up to find that the pass side wheel and axle turns, going into the inner CV, but the inner CV housing stays stationary. There is a total disconnect inside the inner housing.

The CVs are a mere 2 weeks old and I've driven them around 500 miles. This is the first time I've been on the trail in 4x4 since I installed them along with a new inner axle shaft. I only replaced the factory CVs because I'm very high mileage and the boots were leaky, so I started to worry about the joints on the trail. When I replaced the CVs, I noticed the pass side inner axle splines were pretty worn, so I replaced that shaft with the seal as well.

Do you think I've killed it so soon with the combo of lift and locker? Maybe the after market CVs aren't up to the task?

What do you people think? Thanks,

First where did you buy the CVs at?
If from Autozone etc there CVs are not as long as stock
only ones that are are the OEMs or someplace like NAPA who uses stock ones and rebuilds them
How much lift do you have now, if over 23.5 or so then yes you may have killed them if under that unlikely if you got good CVs and intermediate shaft
Also are you sure your locker is still working?

I should have mentioned that my KJ is 22-1/2" from the center of the front wheel, to the lower lip of the fender flare:

The CVs are new (manufactured by GSP), from an online, discount auto parts seller. They are cheap as heck at $49.99 each so I may have just bought junk...

I did compare them to the stock CVs I was taking out and they were an identical length when compressed and expanded. They are dimensionally the same but cosmetically different. The boots and housings, for instance, are very different looking than stock.

The locker is working for sure. The drivers side wheel has normal drive torque, even though the pass side wheel is totally free wheeling. And when I spin the pass side wheel the axle, (between inner and outer joints), turns freely going into the inner boot, but the intermediate axle (and the inner CV housing) don't turn at all.

Pull it and inspect it, even a CV that's /too short/ isn't going to "Free wheel" it'll usually make a bunch of racket and kill the splines etc

and you said you replaced the intermediate and seal so.. you certainly don't want to chew that up, it sounds like if you were to replace that pass side witha Reman CV you'd be operating normally assuming the locker is working

Aussie in the front. Why is that a problem?

Auto locker and Aluminum diff just don't mix well.Must have been a pain to just install since the D30A uses a roll pin to keep the center pin in and not a bolt like all others.

The Aussie Locker install in my Dana 30A was a breeze, once the front end was sufficiently disassembled to allow the CV axle assemblies to be pulled out far enough to get the splined ends unplugged from the differential (that is something you have to do with any IFS 4x4 rig if you want the diff out). The locker installation went fine, step by step, just by following the Aussie instructions. The roll pin easily knocked right out and went back in with a drift pin of the same size.

It has worked really well off road and on road for many thousands of miles. I'm just wishing I never took my factory CVs out! I'm going to put my stocker CVs back in with some new boots and forget about it.

This is just my opinion, but I suspect that the aluminium Dana cant take wild wheel in air spinning brought to a sudden stop by touching the ground. Aluminium isn't strong enough for that kind of abuse. It seems like an auto locker should help to reduce uncontrolled wheel spin and thus reduce the risk of a differential grenade.

I dunno, I might live to regret the front Aussie Locker. Not so far though.

I seem to remember that the 8.25" corporate in the KJ rear also has a roll pin. Its really no big deal to knock out a little pin like that.

You shouldn't have uncontrolled wheel spin with a locker....lock, that is what they do. You may have more issues than you think.

I don't have uncontrolled wheel spin. In fact, just the opposite is the case.

Sorry, misunderstood your comment. I would imagine that you already know that you have a broken axle shaft, stuff happens. Why did you replace them if they were OK?

One of the outer CV joints developed a small leak in the boot several weeks ago. Since I've driven my poor little Liberty 240,000 miles, I started to worry about the CV going out on the trail or the highway somewhere so I decided to replace both sides. I should have just replaced the leaky boot...

This is a clear case of "keep fixing it until its broken"!
