Since a lot of the invited trail rides require a full size spare ( I need to get one for this rig ).

My question is this....is the stock location strong enough to hold a 245 75 16 w/a steel wheel? Or should I just make room in the back, till I can get a reap bumper w/a swing-a-way tire carrier? :juggle:

I think it is although I only put on my 245/75/16's MTR's with spare when I am taking mine off road. I use All terrains on the street 245/70/16.

Mines has had larger tires hanging on the gate for a long time and no problems

I had my stock rim with a 245/75 16 BFG AT/KO and had it on for a long time before any issues...and then it was just annoying rattling. I never noticed how bad it was until I was in the back seat on a hunting trip and all I kept thinking was, OH crap that door is gonna fly open any moment. A few weeks later I removed the spare and secured it inside until I started my bumper project. :)

You can get a ski rack that fits onto the spare alhtough the manual says that you shouldn't put more than 12kg onto it (that's 26lbs), so the tyre mount is rated higher than just the standard wheel.
Having said that I've read a few posts on AusJeep where people are ripping apart rear doors!

I tried hanging a 33" spare tire on my rear tailgate for the heck of it. Looked great but it was too heavy and dented the sheet metal a bit.

Right now I'm hanging a 245/75R16 tire on a stock rim with no problems. I've also flipped the tire carrier over so the flip glass doesn't hit the spare tire. It can happen.
