It's here in the transfercase. (marked D in this pic)

It's hard to reach from below, best option is to take out the center console. Then you can reach it from above.

For a few months my wifes would say part time when it was in 2, and no light when in 4....4 worked fine, so it wasn't a big deal. Then one day after I had 'borrowed' her jeep and taken it down some trails it started working correctly again.....strange.

Hopefully that happens to you too!! Haven't found any answers about what the problem is but I would assume that the switch gets messed up somehow.

It gets stuck. A little lube and you move it up and down and then it would be fine again..well mostly that works.

But you have to take it out of the tranny to do that.

Here's my little write-up.

Did mine today. No problem really as long as you have the right tools. Here's a run down on the steps needed to take out an 02-04 console.

1. pull bezel from Transmission shifter (don't be scared, it pops right out)

2. unsnap the boot around TC shifter and carefully pull up the boot to release the 3 clips holding it down around the perimeter at the console. (this baffled me for a while)

3. Take apart the storage area. Remove the screws from the inside of storage compartment as well as the two screws on top in front. Remove the lid by removing the 3 screws. Then just lift out the storage bin.

4. remove the 2 screws remaining holding the console down. One is on the right side next to the transmission shifter and one is where the TC boot was.

5. Remove the wire harnesses from both the rear window controls and the front seat window controls. Its easier if you first pop out the rear controls from the console so you can see what you're doing.

6. Pull parking brake up as far as you can if you haven't already and also the TC shifter up all the way (4 lo)

7. You should now be able to shimmy off the console and throw it in your yard.

Here's what it looks like with the console removed.

Image

Now after you remove the 4 10mm nuts from the TC shifter you can pull it up and out as you try to move it out of your way the best you can.

Then look down in the hole and you see the :furious: sensor.

Get your 1 1/2" deep socket with an extension and unscrew it. Be careful. This is one of those that just all of a sudden break loose.

Put the new one in snug it down put the plug back on top and you'll be properly informed of the mode you are in. :smokin:

I put dielectric grease in the connector of the switch before I put it in.

Now put everything back together after you've confirmed that the switch is working.

Nice writeup man!

Just to confirm, did you guys have the problem where the light was on when you were in 2, but went off when in 4??? Seems to me like something is backwards or a wire is just shorting out making the switch operate in reverse of normal, no??

How much is that switch?

Does anyone know the part number for the sensor for an 2006 liberty crd?
Is the console removal pretty much the same.

You can also do it from under the vehicle. Crawl under there, reach up and find the sensor... use some vice grips or your choice of wrench. Its a tight fit but it beats taking out the center console. Helps to get the sensor in if the T-case is in 4Hi.

So is the sensor only two wires? how does it determine the difference between 4 full-time, 4 part-time and 4-lo?

Reason i ask was that I was trying to figure out if i could fake the jeep into thinking it was in 4-lo to shut off the TC while actually in 4 hi/2wd.

"Transfer case switch" Mopar part number 5083138aa Bought mine on amazon for $65

Took me a while to find it cause it is listed under drivetrain switches, not as a sensor.

This is a weird answer but here goes... My oil pressure sensor alarm/sound/chime would go off and on when i would accelerate or come to a stop. So I figured I should change that sensor (which is above or below the oil filter i forgot). So when I did that it fixed that problem but it ALSO fixed my 'part time' light which was also continuously on.

Weird but true.

Is the harness shared with the transfer case lighting? Maybe moving the harness effected the light rather than the pressure sensor?
