2005 CRD with OEM LSD. Fluid changed by dealer and supposedly replaced with Mopar synthetic plus additive @ 25K. Clutches wore out at 45K. Dealer replaced clutch pack and put in new fluid/additive under Mopar ESP. At 80K, pinion bearing started howling. Wife was in Nashville. Dealer there replaced everything except clutch pack (all bearings, R&P, etc,), new syn fluid and additive under ESP. 3K later, I can hear the pinion bearing or R&P making noise under power. (It stops when I lift off at highway speed.) It will be going to our local dealer for repair. Is there anything that is particularly finicky about these diffs? Is there anything that they need to really last other than the obvious like proper pinion depth/pattern/bearing preload, etc.? The ESP runs out in 20K and I'd like to get the diff repaired in as longlasting a manner as possible. Thanks, DOC |

Drain synthetic gear oil out and add some dino 85w-140 and friction modifier.Has worked on many vehicles, not just Jeeps,at work with the same issues your having. |

nothing finicky about the diffs. they are a stout build. However, like any diff, they need to be cleaner than clean during the build, that includes the housing, tubes and all parts. Quality bearings and seals are also key. Carefull inspection of the new bearings are essential, as I have come across a few bearings that had issues right out of the box. Also, with a new R&P, it is advisable to drive easily for the first 100-500 miles. And to what TJKJ stated....ditch the synthetic! A quality dino oil will go a long way to helping your diff last. |
