I started having this problem about 2 weeks ago, I will turn my wheel to the right and there will be this huge pop. It only happens when I go at slow speeds (5-10mph), usually backing up or turning out of an area, and it also happens when the jeep is sitting still and I turn the wheel to the right. But it doesnt happen when I turn the wheel to the left.

I tried to find the noise one day and it did sound like it was right at the CV axle. But I couldnt locate the noise. I told a friend of mine about it and he said it sounded like the CV was bad. But of course I have to come to you guys first before I decide to go into a shop and get $$$$ taken out of my pocket

Also, I dont know if this applies to this problem currently but, when I go to slow down from about 15mph, it almost sounds like I am running over something crunchy but I look and there is nothing that I run over. Its an odd noise....

Any ideas?

I checked the ball joints and everything looks well.

How do I take apart the CV and how would I go about checking to see what would be the problem? Im pretty sure I have the tools to be able to do it, I just need to know how to take apart everything and whatnot

Just look at both boots on the CV, the upper and lower (or inner and outer). Look for where grease has sprayed everywhere and where there is a rip in the CV boot. If you find a rip or hole or whatever, that's your problem. CVs last fine until they rip. IF you can catch them right when they rip (which isn't easy), then you can sometimes save them. Otherwise they fail when the boot rips.


If you can't find a rip in the CV boot, the likelihood of it being the CV is lower. Jack it up and spin the wheel, could be the bearing. Upper or lower ball joints too...how did you check them? Maybe have a garage check it out for you if you're having a hard time locating the issue. Also, check the tie rod ends for play!

U Joint? My CVs go click click click when they are unhappy, which the driver side is...

Ooops, turning... hmmm. Bearing? Crunchy noise, really bearing.

U-joints are easy to check....but doesn't the front driveshaft have CV joints??? I forget??

Anyways, U-joints would be a rhythmic clunking or clicking....too bad though, they're so darn easy to change!!

Crunchy sound kinda points more towards bearing....jack that side up and spin the tire. Assuming your brakes are OK?

yea im thinking I need new bearings... any cheap place to get them? You go to a shop and they charge you 500$ a side for them...
