I have a brushguard and I've only seen winches mounted on bumpers... can they only be mounted on bumpers?

Any brush gaurd made for a KJ is not nearly strong enough to support a winch let alone be able to use said winch.

You can also get a mount that is removable and will fit in a front (or rear) hitch receiver. They're not quite as stiff/rigid as a winch bumper or purpose-built mount, but will pull you or your buddies out of jams to the degree that you're not exceeding the capacity of the hitch mount.

That's a great response Cobolt.
Also, some ppl do make brush guards that can take the strain of a winch, but I don't believe I've ever seen one for a KJ -- not to mention, the other methods are much better ideas in most cases.
BTW Cobolt - does your KJ get out often? I'm in Athens and I've seen clacker's KK around, but I haven't seen a lifted KJ around. Then again, I don't get out much.

Wait for one to come up for sale on one of the forums or make your own/custom. I don't think any are still being made. Maybe someone else knows, but ......... :juggle:

Thanks... I try.
Well, I am in a doctoral program here at UGA and moving back to Atlanta in a couple of weeks, so no I don't get out as often as I would like, but jhblackwell is local to Athens and I will still be around for the next year and a half.

PM me for contact info and check out the GA LOST section and introduce yourself to the crew... :)

Wildman is correct. The original ones that mounted like mine does were made by Reese, Hidden Hitch, and DrawTite. AFAIK, the Reese and DrawTite were identical one-piece units. The Hidden Hitch was a two-piece unit that was adjustable and the parts bolted together (I have personally never seen one of these...). They went out of production sometime before the slightly modified front fascia of the 2005 KJ came out, so they require a little more cutting of the plastic.

TonyCRD posted something in the past year about a new model being put out by CURT I think. This model, however, mounts significantly lower that the previous designs.

Mine was the second or third to last that were available from one of our LOST members that in 2007 personally built about 50 front receiver hitches based on the Reese/DrawTite design after they had gone out of production.

Run of search of the forums based on the info provided and see what others have done. Good luck!!! :)

Cobolt,

Any chance of see more pictures of this mount? I am interested in purchasing one.

I would like to see how it affects the approch angle & overhang from the front bumper.

Fil.

Check out any of the pics from the LOST ECS 2009-2011.

I have only ever scraped it twice... once at Black Mountain (ECS 2011) coming off a trail that was at a 45 degree angle into a ditch and up onto a dirt road, and once on Springer Mountain (New Years Day 2011) on a snow run where the hills were like skiing moguls. Both times it was just a scrape of the very edge of the winch cradle.
