Post subject:  Front Skid clearance: Mopar vs Skid Row
I took off my Mopar frond skid the other day to investigate a clunking noise and discovered three things:
1) One of the front bolts was near impossible because the shop that changed my fluids last year apparently partially stripped the bolt or socket or both (impact wrench not really needed here, guys but thanks for the damage..)
2) There was a lot of mud up in there, dried and in big clumps. A little piece of ECS 2011 that I never got out
3) I had to use a pry bar to get the plate off since it was banged up enough to wedge the mounts into the suspension carrier.

I either need to fix the mopar skid and likely repaint or just go get a Skid Row (is there anyone else left making them...?)

My question is this: Is there a significant difference in the clearance beneath the suspension between the two? I know the mopar is contoured somewhat to match the undercarriage and the SR is more of a great big plate. Obviously the latter is more durable, but is it worth the effort to repair/bolster the Mopar when the SR is only a few hundred bucks?

You gain alot of approach clearance with the skidrow plate,it also protects more then the OEM plate,and is twice as thick as the OEM plate.Try JBA for Skidrow plates.

I abused the one I had severly,sold it and it's still getting used on another KJ.

Or just buy it from Skid Row direct :D

I took everyone's advice and ordered a new skid (from JBA since they had the best price at the time). The box arrived in two days and I was (not) shocked to see that UPS had damaged yet another shipment of jeep gear to my house:

I called UPS and they're going to take back my "refused" package...

The thing is armor and I know the scrapes (which are on the back side of that tab) are only cosmetic and will eventually be minor compared to what I subject it too, but I'm a firm believer that something new should look new until there's a justifiable reason for it to not be new anymore.... so bite me, UPS :(

I dont blame you. I would have refused it on principal. They dont know whats in the box...they should be way more careful with it.

The packaging looks pretty poor for a skid plate in reality that has as much to do with it as the way UPS (or any other shipping company for that matter) handles the package, of course a large metal piece loose in a box is going to end up torn through the skid looks to be 3-4" shorter than the box it wouldn't take much of a bump for that to happen. Sorry for the Minor Hi-Jack I have worked for a parts company from the shipping dock up to mid level sales now for quite a few years and know a thing or 2 about packaging things properly. :2cents:

All that aside Skidrow stuff is Beeeefy You'll love it once it's finally on there.

I don't disagree with you... the packaging could have been better and I don't know if that's from JBA or SR, so I'm not going to point fingers, BUT the plate is really not that heavy and anyone who simply didn't drop it would have easily been able to keep that package intact regardless of how it was packaged inside. It's up to the shipper and the shipee to get it to me intact...just the principle of it.

I don't know if I ever showed y'all the damage that UPS did to my boulderbars. They were most definitely packed well with tape and foam wrap with cardboard spacers inside the packaging, etc. Two of the mounting feet were bent at an angle so badly that they wouldn't even sit against the frame to bolt on. It took a guy in a body shop, a vice, and a five pound hammer about 20 minutes to bend things back into shape...

Ironically UPS is headquartered about 5 miles from me and their southeast shipping hub is about 3 :)
