I purchased a 2003 Renegade (70 000kms) a month ago, all black. Its in very good condition. I have never owned a jeep before. Could someone tell me what common problems occur or stuff I should be looking for? Also I recently noticed the engine light came on...I did the code test P0442= evaporative control system. I checked the gas cap seems to be okay...starting to get crappy mileage. I will be going to a mechanic next week for it. I also noticed that when I accelerate the engine kinda makes a whinny noise (not loud)...is that common in jeeps?

any help please and thanks

Where are you from? Kilometers is a dead giveaway! I give the fat o-ring on the gas cap a light coat of wd40 and usually makes the evap code go away. PCV valve, a new one is about 3 bucks, on the oil filler neck. any codes for O2 sensors? Window regulators are under engineered. A squirt of silicone lube on the leading window guides might help a little. Whine could be a alternator, serpentine belt pulley, ps pump off the top of my head.

I'm from Vancouver, B.C Canada. Okay I'll try that out thanks. I also noticed a random chirping noise when the car is idling in DRIVE. 70 000kms seems low/pretty good for a 2003. I dont have a manual. When should I think about doing a big service? and fluids changed? I just did the oil.

Unless you bought it from someone you know I would go through it with a fine tooth comb changing front and rear diffs/transmission / transfer case/ new serp belt / flush the cooling system/ new plugs.
They may have had it done but I would want to make sure myself and that its done right with the right fluids.

The chirp sounds like it could be the belt pulley tensioner. That's what mine sounded like before it went out. You should be able to see it jumping/jerking when it makes the noise.
