| Post subject: | issue with detroit locker |
hello! I have a problem (hope its only in my head) and maybe you can help.. ever since i have installed a detroit locker on the rear axle i hear a bang and a clunk every time i shift gears... and every time i press or release the gas... and have some small shifting issues when shifting into gears (more often the 1st and 3rd gears)... not all the time though, only once in a while... now, the guys that installed it say that it is normal and the DL does it but... is it really? i mean, its really annoying, the kj seems to rip apart... there is no problem when going over bumps or driving in the same gear... only when shifting and pressing/releasing the gas pedal... i have checked the rear upper control arm and it is attached to the diff and i do not have issues with the joints (as far as I know ) so, may be you could help... thanks a lot in advance! |

Sounds to me that the backlash on the ring and pinion is not set correctly. I also have a Detroit Locker and have none of what you are describing. It has the normal "talk" when you go around corners and clicks and clacks a little, that is normal. Jack it the rear axle (put jack stands under each tube) and try turning the pinion by hand. See if it has any major movement before the wheels start to turn. |

I would imagine that the installer gave some kind of warranty on his work, if it were mine I would drive it. Have you taken it back to the installer and asked them to go with you on a test drive? As an FYI, there are potentially numerous reasons for what you are describing. I doubt that the locker install would have anything to do with your 1st and 3rd shift issues, but certainly with the "clunk" when you shift. Check the u joints, make sure the slip joint is lubed, make sure the u joint bolts are tight. Good luck |
