Post subject:  NP231 T-case with 4:1
Has anyone installed a NP231/NV231/NVG231 with 4.1 gear ratio in their KJ yet? If so how well is it working and is it a smart upgrade. It just seems like a logical upgrade to me.

The only 4:1 Jeep Xfer case I'm aware of is the Wrangler Rubicon's NV241OR Rock-Trac. Nope, haven't heard of any Liberty owners doing a 4:1 Xfer case conversion yet. But it's only a matter of time. It might be a costly mod if one or both driveshafts have to be resized, not to mention the cost of the Xfer case if it has to be bought new. You'd have to be pretty lucky to find a wrecked Wrangler that still had its Rock Trac. Hope that helps a little. Anyone else have ideas/experience with this?

Jeepnjer, I think spencevans is referring to a conversion kit that allows you to convert a regular 231 case, like one of the available transfer cases in a Liberty, to a 4:1 ratio. Check this link out for more information:

For $1200 you'd be better off buying an AMC Small block with a 727 torque flite so you don't NEED the 4:1 gears:)

Last I checked nobody (including TeraLow) made a 4:1 kit for the KJ. I put a Roc-Trac in my YJ because of the low cost vs. a 4:1 kit for my old 231 which is also a weaker case. The other option for ths KJ is an Atlas. Expensive, but they do make an appliction for us.

Interesting. I called my Teraflex rep a few weeks ago and asked about the 4:1 kit. He said that the kit will fit all NP231 X-fers. I was not aware there was a difference between the TJ/YJ 231 and the KJ.

In speaking with the guys down at NOVAK here in town, they said it would be as easy as swaping the gears out. They also said the NP231 is the same as those used on the Wrangler and if anyone knows it should be them. What would really be nice is if someone would come out with a gear reduction kit for the NP242.

In fine print on the description of the TeraLow 231 is this - "241/242 t-cases: Call us for details on using our low-range gearing in 241 and 242 transfer cases." Sounds like it's possible but there may be some additional modifications.

So I called Tera and they said they do do gear reductions for Jeep Liberties with the NP231 and the NP242 but you need to have a shop remove the the T-case and send it in. Tera will then machine the case, install the new gears, and ship it back. Sounds only logical if you do a lot of off roading but you may be with out a jeep for a few weeks. Not only do you get a gear reduction to the 4:1 but you also get to keep that handy selec-trac.

I think it would be a good idea to buy another tcase off of ebay or something like that. You could have it shipped to tera from whoever is selling it on ebay then back to you house so you wouldnt pay for shipping 3 times.

Sounds like a good idea but I reccomend living near Salt Lake so you can just drop it off yourself like I plan to do. I also have more great news, I get to go to Moab this weekend. If I make it to the KJ party that'll make three times in two months, not bad. My wife must love me.

Post subject:  Liberty Low Range Gearing Options
I'm currently in the process of installing a 4:1 Klune V and a NVG-231 from a TJ in my wifes 2002 Liberty. We upgraded the 231 with all the HD parts, 6 pinion planetary, wide chain, and front output shaft from a NVG-241. I also installed a JB Conversions Super Short slip yoke eliminator on the 231. Believe it or not it looks like the rear drive shaft will remain close to the same lenght or possibly a bit longer than stock. The Klune V is 7.250" long. The slip yoke eliminator makes up for most of this. The build-up is being covered by 4Wheel Drive and Sport Utility magazine so keep your eyes open for the article in an upcomming issue.
