Ok - this might be the dumb question of the day...

Is the Chrysler 8.25 actually the dana 30? Doesn't seem like it, but I have seen references to both.

no they are not the same

We have a dana 30-A in the front and corp 8.25 in the back.... there where a few dana 35 rears on 2002 models however.

I've always want to ask this question.....Are there any major differences between the D35 and the 8.25? I've seen D35s that exploded on their owners......anything similar with the corporate axle?

Big difference in strength. In the XJ world, pre 96 XJ's had the 27 spline 8.25 which was only slightly stronger than a D35, but mid 96+ XJ's got the 29 spline 8.25 which is comparible in strength to the D44. I'm an XJ guy myself, but I would assume the KJ's being what replaced the XJ, kept the 29 spline 8.25 and improved them with disc brakes and a coil spring suspension. Quite a few of my friends as well as myself run up to 35" tires locked and geared to 4:56 and wheel pretty hard and have never had an 8.25 fail on us.

Flex an XJ...Open door....Try and close door...

The KJ has a stronger Unibody than the XJ, however the XJ does have the SFA over the KJ...pun intended.

Oh no, I see flames, fire! fire!!
I like them both and have had an XJ. They are very different vehicles though, other than both are fun to drive, tight, fairly quick with a 5 speed. My question is, I have rear drum brakes. Was that common in 2002? I don't know if it is the D35 or Chry. 8.25, I do know it is limited slip.

The 02's were the only year that came with Drums in the rear. Take a pic of your rear axle and post it here. You can also call the dealership and give them your vin and get them to pull up the build sheet and it will say what axle it has. As far as the flames, I had no intention to flame any XJ owners. I respect them like I respect any other Jeep owner.

My xj is my wild one with a 8.25 (27 spline) with a detroit and a dana 30 with a truetrac running 4.10s. The kj has the 8.25 (29 spline) and dana 30 but no lockers but does have 3.73 gears, not bad for a stocker. I do like the disc brakes in the kj and been thinking of swapping my xj's for some zj's brakes. I wonder if the kj's disc would fit.

The 8.25 is a decent rear end, way better than a D35. With its c-clips, I am not sold on it being equal to a D44, though. Call me a stick in the mud, but good old fashioned bolt-in axles are my preference. All '97-newer 8.25's have 29 splines, be it in a jeep, Dakota, whatever.
