Post subject:  New 2006 Jeep Liberty transmision for the 3.7 engine

I had previously posted a message asking the differences between the
older Liberty (04) and the newer Liberty (06). I was able to find
out some information on the new transmissions they are using. I will
say I am getting better gas mileage than on the previous Liberty with
the same engine. The below information I got directly off from the
Allpar website and it explains the difference in the new
transmissions now being used in all 3.7 Jeep Libs. I hope it is true
that the newer transmissions will last longer.

Does anyone else have any additional information on what the Variable
Line transmissions (otherwise known as 42RLE VLP Transmission which
the new Jeep Libs have?

From the following link http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions.html

Some four-speed transmissions gained variable line pressure (VLP) for
2006. The VLP transmission frequently adjusts its internal fluid
pressure to reduce parasitic losses from the pump and hydraulic
system, increasing gas mileage and lengthening the transmission
lifespan. For 2006, transmissions connected to the 3.7 liter V6, as
well as the 2.7 engine in the LX series, get VLP.

Thanks,
Cristina

Yeah, VLP is a thing lots of companies have been using for several years at least. It can adjust to your individual driving style and apply the pressure needed to keep your tranny in lock-up mode more of the time. This reduces heat from friction...which extends life of your tranny. And in lock-up mode all automatics will get better mileage because it's not losing energy to heat.
