There have been at least two other threads associated with this, but it's come up on my rig now. I have a 2005 CRD with the limited-slip rear. Friday I was in a minor accident...guy pulled out of a parking lot across one lane of stopped traffic to hit me, causing some light cosmetic damage to my front fender flare and rocker "protection." The next day, backing out of my driveway in the morning, a repetitive "clunk...clunk" noise that correlated perfectly with ground speed. Going forward makes the noise go away, but another one takes its place: sounds like brake pad moan, which goes away as soon as you get over a few MPH. Both sounds disappear as soon as everything is warmed up. My questions: 1. Other threads have said "Change the fluid in the dif." I have 7000 miles on this rig, well within the 12k service interval. No deep water crossings or anything. Why would changing the fluid make any difference on this noise? 2. It seems unlikely that the impact with the right front tire could cause a problem back in the rear dif, doesn't it? How could it? 3. Anyone who has had this noise...have you had it fixed, and if so, how? Any TSB's on it? 4. Anybody else heard the moaning noise associated with this? Is it possible that the E-brake cable issue (known) is causing the limited slip to do something? Thanks! |

Get a shop to check to see if your driveshafts are balanced. |

It wouldn't be a bad thing to change the oil. I have a 05 with a limited slip and I started to notice sounds in the rear and it started to feel different after bout 10k miles. I changed the diff oil last weekend and all is better now. I did notice alot of gunk on the magnet in the bottom of the housing. |

I had this problem and it was my U joint that had caused my driveshaft to go bad. Check both. |
