At this point the guys down in the BDS R&D shop are making progress on the Liberty. Cage is in and they've been going through finish welded all the seams. 1-3/4" x .120 wall DOM tubing was used to secure the passenger compartment and extends forward into the engine bay to reinforce the frontend integrity now that the unibody and IFS subframe have been scrapped. Front and rear coil-over mounts are being built in as we'll as we await the arrival of our new 14" Fox 2.5 remote C/O and Fox 2.0 bumps any day now. Our PSC JK steering box is mounted to the front "framerail" after taking the time to sleeve and plate the unibody. The OE steering shaft linkage bolted right up and won't require much further modification. We'll have more on this in our next post/video update. Our wheels made it in from B.A.D. Wheels. They are a 17x10 with 3.5" backspacing to get our desired stance and allow a bit more room for the suspension/steering components. They feature several cool design features for safety and rapid air deflation. For now we're mounted them to a set of 40" Maxxis Trepador radials to continue mocking up the rig. We've got a set of the brand spankin' new 40x13.50x17 DOT approved Nitto Trail Grapplers on order with expected arrival at the first of June. We'll have a closer look at the wheels and tires at that time. For now enjoy a few pictures I grabbed while down at the shop today. As parts arrive we'll see a quick transformation as this rig gets closer to being mobile again. Stay tuned for more and let us know what you think so far...

as i stated on jeepKJ [QUOTE=rockymountain;600233]at this point it may be better to just have a tube buggy......?[/QUOTE] there is too much of it GONE to be a KJ. if i was going to do a build like this would have just built a tube buggy that llooked like a KJ and swaped the 2.8, wiring, dash, ECt into the buggy. would be a lot cheaper and easy then sell the KJ chassis |

While a tube buggy with a KJ front clip may seem easier to make into a trail vehicle, our goal is turn this Jeep into comfortable dual purpose rig that feels stock on the inside (if not for the roll cage). We plan to reuse the stock leather seats, interior panels, dash, gauges, cruise control, and AC, all of which were already functioning properly for us at the beginning of the project. We wanted to show how a stock KJ could be modified into a low slung trail rig. While some might say the cage work is a bit excessive, with plans for me to pilot this Jeep on the Ultimate Adventure this year I welcome the extra safety precautions and overbuild mentality. |

Canvas "trektop should look pretty cool covering the back! and I call " shotgun " for the Ultimate Adventure

Granted some parts are comp'd, but most products are purchased for the build. We picked up the KJ for around $6K and have been sourcing parts and materials to install and fabricate. DOM ain't cheap that's for sure! We've done a few builds over the years and the biggest investment to us is the time and energy involved to take engineers off new product development to work on the project builds. Sure we could field out the work to a custom builder, but where's the fun in that. Our engineers are enthusiasts and like to do some off the wall projects from time to time. Typically we shy away from tallying up the final build costs for fear of the bossman getting sticker shock, same as you would if your wife asked you how much money you've got in your Jeep. |

Why dont yall give Green Diesel Engineering a call and get that 2.8L tuned you can always use the extra power and torque when off road. And with the proper tune you can make 400lb/ft of torque at the rear wheels and still get great fuel milage. |

We don't claim to be engine experts, so we know when to call in a favor. We have some diesel tuning planned for a bit later in the build that will be performed by our buddies over at Offroad Power Products. They'll be going on the UA this year and wanted to check out the progress of our KJ and put their mark on it. It'll be getting a couple of upgrades to bump up the performance w/o sacrificing reliability. We'll have more on the performance upgrades in the next couple weeks as that comes together. |

Yep but sounds like they are going the route outside of our suggestions even though there are alot of CRD owners who can vouche for Keith and the reliabilty of his tunes. But I have a feeling it will end up with and aftermarket tuner and some exhaust and air box work because I doubt they will even attempt to mess with the turbo or ECM. |

While the turbo upgrade is a possibility in the future, it may not happen as part of the initial build. Cooper and the guys over at Offroad Power Products are working on a custom tune and several off the shelf parts to boost the performance. While 400 ft/lbs sounds great, we're trying to keep our JK Dana 44s in one piece for this trip. |

 This week the guys are busy working on the suspension of the Liberty. Up front, lower control arms are fabbed up and the unibody has been reinforced to mount the LCA brackets. Upper arms and track bar mount going in soon. In the rear, a triangulated 4-link has resides to improve suspension travel and eliminate the need for a rear track bar as space is limited. Fox Racing 14” remote 2.5 coilovers and 2.0 bumps are in route to the shop to install next week. After cycling the rear suspension, its becoming apparent that much more trimming will be necessary to clear the 40” meats. It’s something we had planned on with a modest preliminary cut, but the extent to which we will need to trim and rework the fenders will be extensive so we can get the full potential out of our new suspension. We had some comments regarding the planned location of the spare tire. It’s tough to fit the 40” rubber, but here’s what we have in mind at the moment (see photos). To keep it as low as possible to increased visibility and keep the center of gravity down, we are considering recessing it down into the floor a couple inches and trimming the tailgate to allow it to occupy the inside of the tailgate when closed. In doing so the thought is to build a fuel cell for the bed (between the rear seat and spare tire) that would accept the OEM fuel sending unit while allowing us to keep the function OEM fuel filler location. There’s plenty going on in the shop this week as we make progress towards a Liberty based trail rig. Nearly every day we’re receiving parts for the project and hopefully she’ll be mobile in the coming week(s) with new steering, suspension, axles, t-case, and driveshafts.
