Metal Shavings on Input Sensor

Hi all.

I have a 2005 4x4 Liberty. Here recently it started to slip gears pretty bad. Sometimes it will engage into 1st and reverse. After playing with the shifter and giving it a little gas, the transmission will whirrr and engage. Its very erratic at best. The fluid levels are fine and does not smell burned. However, the transmission fluid is not bright red but more of a brown/red.

What concerns me is that when I removed the input sensor, there was what seemed to be a big metal shaving "FRO" at the other end. :shock:

This is not silt. Its more like a sharp thin shaving hairdo coated around the magnetic tip.

I cleaned it off and reinstalled the sensor. I could manage to drive it. First and second gear engaged and the whirring went away. And after a few minutes of driving it was back to the same old whirring sound and slipping.

Has anybody experienced this?

If you have metal shavings in your transmission, a rebuild is soon to follow.

Drop the pan and see what's inside. Lots stuck to the magnet = bad. Change the fluid and filter - ATF+4 only - and see if that helps. But I'm afraid you're in the same boat as I (I'm putting a lower-mileage used trans in today).

Thanks for replying.

Im picking up a filter change kit and a new input sensor. I noticed that the old sensor has a few scrapes. I will reply on what it does later.

I know that a transmission change is inevitable, so i will be looking on car-part.com for a nice used one in the Oklahoma area. If you don't mind how much and what is the mileage of the transmission you are getting?

Nice!!!

Just changed out the input sensor. Still have the same problem.

Earlier, i stated that it was the input sensor had metallic flakes. It was actually the output sensor that had it.

I noticed that the old input sensor had a bulge compared to the new one.oh well off to change the filter. I will report my findings after the pan is pulled off.

Quick question. Are all 42RLE's the same? Lets say i find one from a Charger or a Dakota. Do i have to do any modifications or is it bolt on and drive off?

I do know you have to match the number of wire connections on the left side. My '05 has three, the other option was four.

Not sure if you have to match 4x4 or not; on my GM, the output shaft and tailhousing are different (requiring a total teardown to swap). On the Jeep, I'm not sure if it's just a different extension housing (or lack of one).

I pressed the easy button and got a tranny from an '05 Liberty 4x4 with 3 wire connections on the left side that had been rear-ended.

Ok. I decided to go ahead and give the filter change a try before committing on a used transmission. And it seem to be running great. I took it on an hour trip around the city and so far no problems. However When i got home i noticed that one of the bottles i picked up was Dexron/Mercon fluid. In a panic I took it to a lube place here in town to have them flush it and now its smooth again. I know this may be temporary but i will still buy this transmission just in case.

You do know most lube places don't use ATF4 right?
