I have 275k on my 04 jeep liberty sport... today when i put it into drive it wouldnt engage... i put it reverse, wouldnt engage....then i tried 1st and 2nd ..nothing..

when i put it park though it make a buzzing/clicking noise that slowed and stopped.

i tried putting in 4wd and the nothing...the 4wd lever felt VERY loose when i pulled it up... THEN i noticed something..it slowly started to engage... i then rapidly pulled the 4wd lever up and down about 5 times and it kicked in...so i put it back into 2wd and it worked... put it in Drive and off i went.....

Any ideas what might be wrong?

ive never replaced the transmission..i HAVE replaced the trans fluid and filter about 50k miles ago.

Check fluid levels. Tcase making it work could just be coincidence...more likely with the description that trans fluid is low and it had to build pressure.
