so this morning i get in my 02 kj and turn the key i hear a rattling noise; and engine cut out as soon as i took my hand off the key it stalled out. had it towed to my buddy's shop he thinks it may have over heated and that the engine may be done. the jeep is smoking pity bad not sure its worth repair we looked up prices and used engines with 150 are over 2 grand rebuilt is even more any one have any ideas.

i am feeling very conflicted about what to do

Take it from someone who has been there with an 02 as well. I rebuilt mine and ended up spending 1,800 to replace the Crank, connecting rods and pistons not to mention all the added little things that need to be on spec. If I had to do it over again I would just get a remaned one from http://www.powertrainproducts.net/Dodge-3-7-Engine-Jeep-3-7-Engine-02-03-p/1307.htm. With the optional coverage your engine will out last the body.

If you do the rebuild take the block to a good machinist and make sure your cylinder wall are within factory spec and not ovaled. Make sure the valve seats are correct and seal. If you want any vendors that I dealt with (most were on-line) let me know and I will send you a list of what I needed to replace and what needs replaced.

it's more likely that a head has failed than blowing the bottom end. a multitude of things can happen to cause that.

Either way, parts and labor, new plugs, I have done a complete head replacement both sides on one of these with new timing tensioners/runners/adjusters for $1600. only $1100 of that was parts.

I learned about it from my father-in law he replaced his 4.0 in his WK 2 or 3 years ago. Engine runs great looked new when we installed it.

Unless you have a few months and a very full checking account, just reinstall another 3.7.

And you don't have to use the same model year engine to do a swap to another 3.7 if you're willing to break down the new engine to install timing wheels on the crank and the right cam sprocket.

I put in a 3.7 from an '07 Dakota with only 9700 miles. Engine cost me $1000 even, with timing rings, gaskets and various items needed it ran me just under $1500 total. Did all the work myself in my garage. Took me a week (in the winter while being on the road several of those days) so if you can devote a weekend to the job you can get it done pretty quickly.

lfhoward just replaced his '08's 3.7 with one from Jasper. You could PM him, I forgot what he mentioned as far as cost wise.

As far as getting a JK, a 4door will be a pretty close replacement as far as room and size, especially if you have a family and need the rear seats. I also recommend getting the 3.6 if you do go the JK route. Pentastar powered JKs are '12+.

I don't know exactly what came with the Freedom edition, but I think it was more a graphic package thing than anything. So still basically a Sport with some extras.

My friend just bought a '14 JKU Sport a few months ago. He loves it, rides nice too.
