Post subject:  driveshaft u-joint types?

I'm looking at replacing the u-joint(s) on my rear drive shaft after finding a torn boot on the t-case side of the front unit. It would be a form of preventative maintenance, as I figure after 100k miles, they're due to have problems soon.

My question is what type of joints are used? I know the front has two rzeppa cv's, but what type (or really size) are used in the rear. Everything I've read suggests a 1310 at both ends past the slip-joint and big flywheel thingy, but I also can't find authoritative confirmation that a 1310 is indeed what's used. Can anyone chime in based on experience? Also, are all models and driveline types the same (joints)? I mostly want to know on an 05 CRD with RFE545 and NV242 :)

I am under the beleif you are correct, 1310 U joint at both ends (same size). I have not replaced mine yet but looked in to it a month ago so I could get mine changed out due to a vibration on acceltration. That is what I've come up with so far.

This is what I was going to get but haven't done so yet.

That one has the inner retaining clips, i think:

I think our driveshafts use the external (side of the bracket) clip type:

1310 external clips. The 4 cylinder kj has a different size at the tc end IIRC. I remember them asking me at the parts house, and I had to run out and measure it

So, yours was 1310s on both ends? What part gets measured. The caps look to be the same diameter between them, just the cross is a bit larger on the 1330s.

Spicer lists both the 5-153x or 5-213x as KJ u-joints.

The 5-153x is a 1310 u-joint and the 5-213x is a 1330 u-joint.

1310 u-joint is 3.219" width and 1.062" cap width,the 1330 u-joint is 3.625" width and a 1.062" cap.

They asked me the width, mine measured around 3.25". Tjkj2002 already broke it down. Which kj got the 1330?

They don't state it and I've never seen it,that is just what Spicer lists for KJ's.

I run 1350 u-joints which is the same width but much thicker then a 1330 and I've never seen a KJ with anything that big as far as a u-joint is concerned.

The width makes it easy enough to determine. Even with the differences in the recess of the flanges, 3.2" is pretty easy to tell apart from 3.6".

Thanks for the info!
