| Post subject: | CB Radio Mounting?? |
I'm in the process of hunting for a proper mounting spot for my CB radio. I was thinking of mounting it behind the spare tire by drilling into the spare tire mount. If I do this will I need some kind of mounting bolt, or will a simple bolt and washer work? The other place I was looking at was in the rear door jam. I saw a few other KJ's that mounted their CB's this way. Any advice would be helpful... I'm searching the forum right now for info. Would love to get this done this week if possible. |

Okay, I found this awesome thread and this is what I'm looking for. I want a rear mounted firestix... viewtopic.php?p=662816#p662816 My only question is this mount the same as the recommended one in the thread? http://www.walcottcb.com/firestik-ss204 ... p-317.html |

Yup, that is the same one I used. There are two versions though. One version has a coax connector for the antenna wire, and the other is designed for the lower profile ring connector. Get the mount that matches the antenna cable you have. This is the kit I got: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000X3 ... UTF8&psc=1 |

Can anyone recommend a good interior location to mount the CB? I was thinking of taking the dash apart and mounting it above the AC vents above the radio. To me this seems like the most practical location. I have been trying to get an interior view of a Jeep KJ Liberty police SUV to see how they did their setup. |

![]() My solution - not good if you like to change channels a lot or don't have an external speaker. A lot of people on here just fasten them to the passengers side of the console. |

You can get one of the kits that have an aluminum bracket that slides into the gap between the radio and the right trim upright on the center console. They're made for cell-phone mounts, but are easily modified for a CB. I personally have my cell there an use it for nav... but I thought about using it the other way. Dan |

Dan I'm not sure what you are referring to... can you snap a picture? I'm sorry but I'm not picturing it. This weekend I sat in my driveway and tried placing my CB in every possible location, and hour and 3 beers later I only liked 2 places. The center dash board right above the AC vents, or in that useless cubby hole at the base of the center instrument column next to the cigarette lighter. I've seen it where some others have cut the back of this area out so their CB can fit inside. I would rather not cut this area up and would rather prefer the top of the dash board but its looking to be a pain to take the dash board apart. In my old F150 it took two steps to remove the plastic on the dash to get inside. In the Liberty it appears that its a long process of removing the dash board piece by piece to get back there. I'm going to order a Chilton's total repair manual for the 2004 Liberty and I hope that it includes a breakdown of all the steps I will need to undergo to get back there so I can install the CB and get this bad boy hooked up. Either way I will do a picture thread to show what I did and how I did it. Any advice

It works well for a "all-in-the-tranceiver" types like the cobra I have, but might only be good for your handset if you have the brick-type (which I think you do):

Yeah I had to cut a hole in the bottom of the console bucket the same size as the radio for it to fit. |

I'm going to attempt to install the CB radio in that useless cubby hole next to the cigarette lighter. |

The gap between the bottom and top dash panels just below where you did yours would be ideal if I could fab up a little bracket out of aluminum (or similar) that could be fastened underneath and the panel popped in place over it. Dan That would work. But like Tommudd said..."a jeeps not yours until you drill that first hole in it". This KJ is definitely mine. |

Okay I ended up mounting my CB reciever and mic this past weekend... viewtopic.php?f=6&t=79614 I hope to be able to get a good Fire Stick, mounting bracket, and cable this week from Radio Shack so I can finish my install. If not then I will have to order from Amazon. The only question I have now is do I need a spring on my fire stick? I'm looking at the 3 foot model antenna so that should be plenty large enough. Have others installed a spring? Do I need it? I'm a noob when it comes to Fire Sticks and if they need this part or not. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00042 ... 5NG72UVSTT My concern is that it will cause the antenna to smack the back of my Liberty and damage the paint. One of my buddies said that I don't need it, and another said that I do. Both of them drive trucks though, so I figured I'd ask the Liberty experts if a spring is needed on a Liberty. |

I have the 3 footer mounted above my tail light, with a quick disconnect and a spring. The quick disconnect is so I can stow the antenna when parking in the city so it doesn't mysteriously disappear. The spring has been helpful when I've forgotten the antenna was on and driven through a drive-thru or into a parking garage. Without it there would have been damage. |

I've been running without a spring, but will be adding one soon. I'm afraid a big enough branch will bend either the antenna or the mount. |

| Post subject: | Re: CB Radio Mounting?? |
Thanks for the info about the spring, I didn't even think about the antenna getting snagged on something and bending or causing damage. I'll defiantly add it to my cart now. I also thought about running everything through one antenna, but I would rather keep them separate. I have the receiver and the mic hooked up, I also have it powered as well. See Here --> viewtopic.php?f=6&t=79614 The one thing holding up this mod is locating a Firestik, antenna cable, spring, and rear door jam mount within my price range. I can get all three through Amazon for about $40 bucks, but before I pull the trigger on them I'm going to research my local options first. This weekend I'm going to hit the Flying J truck stop and see what they have and what their prices are... I've also located the one Radio Shack within a hundred miles that is stocked to the rafters with every CB radio accessory imaginable. So after this weekend I will either have the parts in hand, or will order them online. Can't wait to get this mod done so I can move ahead and focus on some more important mod's. |
