I just inherited a 2006 Liberty Renegade, upon driving it I found that when taking off in 1st gear, it will jump out and make a loud bang and will sometimes grind. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, what is the fix for it? I have tried to search the forum and have not come up with a solution yet.

Thanks

Has anyone done this? What was the price on it? I don't have the time to do it myself and unfortunately that means I will spend BIG $$$ to get it done at the dealer. Any advice/info would be appreciated.

Don't hold me to this as that diagnosis may not even be the issue. I'd still have it at least checked out by a mechanic you trust to make sure. I beleive the repair if that is it would be pretty expensive since they would need to drop the transmission.

Have you changed the transmission fluid or done a flush? I guess they say to start with the cheapest and work your way up so I'd take the above diagnosis as a possible last resort option of whats going on. You should change out the transmission fluid every 60k miles or so. Maybe try doing that and seeing if it has any affect.

My Cherokee (UK Liberty) occasionally appears to jump out of first (and being under load it does make a bit of a bang - especially when towing) but I've deduced that it's because I haven't quite got the gear to engage properly and it's being pushed out. If it is properly engaged no amount of power on/power off shenanigans will make it come out and even a light pressure on the gear lever wont disengage it.

It seems there's a very fine line between being "fully engaged" and being "not quite engaged". It's exacerbated here because the LHD version still uses the RHD gear lever so first is a bit of a stretch for those of us with short arms

Might be worth checking
