04 KJ A/C Problem

Alright...this one is a little tricky to word so apologies in advance if this comes out as a clusterfudge. So AC on, fan on 1. Blows fine for about 15 minutes, then the power of the air coming from the vents slows down. Turn up to 2, blows fine again for about 10 minutes. Air has gone from hitting you in the face to barely feeling it on your chest. Same thing through speeds 3 and 4. At 4, you can still hear it blowing air like a champ from behind the dash, but just not pumping thru the vents. Acts the same way thru all the settings.

I confirm the exact same issue with a 07 KJ (3.7 auto). Issue still there after changing a/c compressor, a/c clutch and blower motor resistor board. I have NOT changed the orifice tube yet.

I just recalled this: viewtopic.php?t=80490 ; I haven't had the opportunity to remove the blower motor either -- winter here makes the issue less painful and motivation for DYI significantly lower...

Hmmm. A friend of mine suggested the blower motor as well.

Just got it back from the dealer. They have no idea. Recommended replacing compressor and drier, for $1054..... Guess I'll play with it a little more. Probably gonna order a compressor and change it out. A little AC is better than no AC.

When changing the a/c compressor, I also changed the drier. It didn't help. Just sayin', YMMV.

Yeah I figured, but my ac quit blowing cold right before I took it in. He mentioned something about everything being pressurized behind the dash and that one of the door could be malfunctioning but that don't seem right to me in our case.

Are we talking about the force of the air coming out of the vents?

OR

Are we talking the temperature of the air coming out of the vents?

If it's the force of the air coming out of the vents your concerned with, and a dealership charged you money for new ac components under the hood, take your jeep back and pimp slap someone. Cause under hood components affect temperatures.

I know the WJ's are notorious for "blend" door, gate failures in their climate control system.

Does this happen with heat too?

And I'm not sure if the kj has a cabin filter.. But plug filters equal no flow.. Thr blower will make noise... But no air will get through.

Hope this help. I plan on removing my ac, and installing a generator head of some sort.

Force of the air. The temperature problem just started recently, the initial problem of force has been going for... Say 7 or 8 months. I didn't have them do any work on it, just asked them to take a gander while it was in there for the hitch recall.

Does it matter which direction the blower is blowing? Defog, lower, upper, bi lev? Do you have a force issue in all instances? If so, lean towards a a motor, main flow problem.. Like a cabin filter. I have found the weirdest stuff in people's blowers. I once found a whole handful of napkins in my moms car blower motor.

Essentially, my advice to you. Because I don't know your level of experience with automobiles. I would advise you to grab your tools, and get to a u pull yard that has liberties. There I would "practice" tearing into the dash and exposing te entire hvac assembly, take a Hanes manual or a pad and pencil and make notes.

Then when you do your vehicle you will get it done faster and you won't break anything. It's usually not until I start ripping and tearing into a vehicle until I find the problem. And 9 times out of ten, once I find it, it's immediately apparent.

Likewise, it's hard for me to tell you exactly what ls wrong with your kj over the internet. But, I trust that you will find your issue once you start ripping and tearing.

Did they even check to see if the system has pressure to it before they start replacing stuff? You could have a fubar'd o ring somewhere. A simple ten cent o ring, and the cost of an ac recharge of course. But even then, an average person can watch youtube and dyi it with a kit from a parts store.

Sorry for the multi post. But I am really upset with the way mechanics do things nowadays. Most auto parts stores do loan a tool program, grab yourself an ac pressure tester kit. Two minutes, it will tell you loads about the condition of your ac system. I hear they even have kits that supply compressed air to help find leaks.

In my case, it's also the force of the air, regardless of direction and whether a/c is on or off. The mesh in the glovebox compartment is clean, a/c system ha required pressure, drier is new. A fellow mechanic suggested it might be the orifice tube, but if it were, there would be lots of not so cold air, right? Unfortunately, the car is waiting for a lift glass to be replaced in the insurance company workshop, so it'll take a couple of weeks before I take it for a blow motor inspection (don't feel confident to do it myself)...

Going to the wreckers and dismantling their vehicles is the best way to see what's what and why.

I do it all the time. I don't break their stuff and the parts always stay in the vehicle anyways.

I look at it like this. It's free self education and the next guy coming in for a part, doesn't have to rip and tear, cause I alreadly left it in the back seat.

That's just my style. If I can't physically confirm a part is toast.. A new one doesn't get ordered.

Preventative maintenance parts are different of course. If I can see a cracked belt or boot or something I don't wait for it to explode. Lol... Although there was this one time... J/k

Update. Compressor is shot. So looks like I'll be doing a compressor and dryer in the near future. Probably throw a new orifice tube in there while I'm at it. But yeah unrelated to the original issue.

So, replaced pressure sensor (the guy in the shop didn't tell me which one), flushed core, cleaned filter (the one below the plastic windshield/wipers base), recharged with freon. Now it blows your head off. Let's see how it develops in the next weeks...
