Post subject:  What diff do I have?

I am thinking about getting a Powertrax no slip, but I am not sure if I have an open or LSD diff. The green band on the driver side of the axel says 8.25 KJ and 3.73 OPEN-CASE. This leads me to believe that I have an open diff. Now when on a dirt road and I punch the gas, I leave two tire tracks behind. This leads me to think that I have an LSD. So I am not sure.

My Lib is a 2003 Libertry Renegade. How can I correctly determine which diff I have so I know which powertrax no-slip to get?

I would have thought a Rennie would be LSD. One sure fire way to find out is to get both rear wheels off the ground. Spin one wheel and if the other one spins in the same direction you have an LSD. If it spins in the opposite direction it is open.

Its definitely an 8.25 though.

FWIW my '05 Renny was an open diff. so that's not a reliable indication.

Get out the floor jack then...

What's the best way to keep it from rolling? In order to jack up the rear end and turn the wheels, the trans needs to be in neutral.

Before you get the jack out, just look under it. My axle has a label still on it. I think it's on the driver's side, that says what it is.

Or, get a floor jack and put it under the diff to get the tires off the ground an inch or so. It won't tip. Block the front tires.

Don't you have your original window sticker? that will say.

Oh, and Renegade's didn't come with it automatically. It's an option like all others. Dumb, but it is.

He's got an 03 so I wouldn't trust what any of the tags on the diff says.

why not?

I have an 03 also.

If the cover's been off like for a locker or sometihng tags get lost or mishandled. It just too easy to jack up the back and be sure.

I'm not talking about the little metal tag that tells what gears are inside. I'm talking about a green sticker that is just inboard of the LR wheel that says: 8.25, 3.73, TRAK-LOC on it. Mine is still easily visible (just went in the garage and checked) after 41k and plenty of mud.

And I didn't even need a jack.

(hell, I don't even have shoes on!)

Seriously, you don't have this sticker? I'm surprised it lasted, but it's there. Sure takes guess work out of things.

(didn't mean to come across as a wise arse)

I guess my sticker was beat off of it long ago. But I knew I had an LSD from the way it handled off road. And besides I ordered it new that way.

I still have the green tag. As mentioned in my original post, it says "OPEN-CASE". When I get a change, I will try the wheel test. I'm not sure if my hydrolic jack will lift the rear of my KJ. If not, I can use my hi-lift and lift one side and brase it up, then lift the other side.

well if it says open case, it's open.

Also, if you have a trailer hitch, stick your hi-lift in there to lift rear.

Post subject:  open or not

Even an open rear can spin both rear tires if the load is evenly distributed, and it is on a loose surface. Not often, and not for long, but it can do it. I'll bet if you had turned your wheels right or left, and the rear end moved side-to-side a bit, it would have gone to one wheel (usually the passenger side.)

It's an open for sure. When I jacked it up and turned a tire, the other tire either didn't turn or turned slightly in the opposite direction.

Thanks,

To check for an open diff. jack up one wheel, put it in nuetral, and the wheel should spin easily. if it doesn't it is limited slip (trak-lok) or locker. The driveshaft will rotate.
