Post subject:  Command trac 4x4 shift lever moves freely now

Recently when I tried to shift into 4x4 mode 4hi on my 05 kj renegade, the lever met a little resistance, which it normally does, then started moving completely freely and the jeep stays in 2hi.

I removed the leather covering around the handle. I see a horizontal gray plunger under it. When I move the handle, the inside plunger moves inside the outside cylinder covering. How is it supposed to work? Should this be diagnosed further from inside or outside? Has anyone else seen this? I probably shift into 4x4 a couple times a year and it has always worked before.

Get underneath. Sounds like the cable popped of the lever on the transfer case.

Where does the cable attach to the transfer case lever underneath? I put it on ramps and used my creeper to look under it, but I don't see any loose cables. I took a picture. Let me see how I can post it.

It attaches on this post - just snaps on.

And the end that snaps on there looks like this

Thanks for the pictures. Where is that post? Is it on the front, back or one of the sides of the transfer case? I don't see it; do I need to remove the stock rock guards to get to it? Thanks.

Driver's side towards the rear.

Nope, no need to remove the decorative rock rails; mine were in place for the photo.

Here the cable's in place. You can see the switch from the above photo and rear driveshaft connection. Slide behind the driveshaft and look.

Thanks for those pictures.

The plastic piece inside the end of the cable broke and the cable slipped off the transfer case.

I had to reach up from behind the transfer case on the driver side and I could feel the end of the cable. It's just an empty ring. The plastic piece above just fell out. I could place that ring over the post, but need to find a replacement plastic piece or something to keep the ring on the post.

Go to Ace hardware and get a metal ΒΌ" axle snap nut. Done.

Thanks for the pictures and information about the 4x4 transfer case. That was very helpful. Ace did not have an axle snap nut but I got a speed cap from them and slipped it on. So far, it's holding on.

So lately, I replaced the UCAs and ball joints (well had a shop replace them), but myself replaced the hood and gate lifters, replaced the a/c condenser fan, cleaned the inside recirculate inlet vent, and fixed the transfer case cable connector. I just need to figure out the windshield and back window washer tubing in the engine bay to replace them after a ravenous mouse chewed on them (see my other post).
