Post subject:  Wheels and tires for my lifted KJ???

Ok Ive got an 05 CRD that Im going to lift with a JBA 4" lift. Im going to put an ARB front bumper/winch/lights and some rocker skids on it. I want advice on the largest (within reason tires ((thinking BFG mud terrains)) that I can go with out having to re gear and rub. My main question is this; why do people always refer to "Moabs" when they talk about wheels? Do I need new wheels? Are the stock wheels NOT 8"ers?

Thanks in advance.

Moabs are TJ Wrangler Rubicon factory wheels and its because they are wider and have some more back spacing so they have a deeper cup to the face and look great. Mine with the 265/70R16 Duratracs are perfectly lined up with the stock fenders.

Be aware that you will need the cut CV's for your 4" lift. I did OME plus 1/4" clevis and JBA top plate and I'm pretty sure my CV's are at the absolute limit. I hear them chirp once in a while.

hey Tom,
Stock wheels are 7 inches wide and work great with any tire size we can run on any KJ lifted or not
IF you think you want new wheels then stick with 7 inches wide and 4 inches of backspacing which sits the wheel out some
Moabs are 8 inches wide and although I run them wish all the time they would be 7 inches wide, would be perfect then
Many run the 265-70-16s on the MOABs since they are same height as the 245-75-16s but wider so sit on the MOABs way better

Thanks everyone. If I decide to go that route, where can I buy some Moabs?

31 or 32's on 15" wheels...

Way better pricing and a much larger sidewall!

I bought 4 of them off craigslist and then a 5th one off ebay. They shouldnt be too hard to find. I had them refinished and spent too much $ doing that but they came out good.

They probably dont make 15" Moabs. If I get new 15" wheels what do I want as far as offset and backspacing? Tom mentioned 4" of backspacing. What about offset?

I wouldnt mind some Mickey Thompson wheels on 31x10.50x15's.

Moabs are only in 16 inch, no 15s
off set and backspacing are one or the other, Just look for 4 inches of backspacing and 7 inches wide,
or 5 inches of backspacing and 8 inches wide if you think you need that wide for some reason

The wheels Im thinking of are Mickey Thompson Classic 3's. Here are the stats:

Bolt Pattern
5x4.5
Backside
3 5/16
Max Load
2000
Weight
17

What does Backside mean? Back spacing?????

Ironically 245/75 was the stock tire size on TJ Rubicons....but I agree with Tom. My 245/75 Duratracs on Moabs just look kinda funny. Gonna have to look into 265/70s next time I need tires.

How wide ?? If 8 inches they are going to stick out past the flares a good bit and also create issues with rubbing
If 7 inches wide , well they would work but...

Jeep wanted to advertise that they had 8 inch wide wheels and 31 inch tires at the time the Goodyear MTRs in 245-75-16 size is what they could get
