When you get stuck, say for example in a ditch, and you are in 2WD, how do you shift into 4WD to get out?

This is on an 06 Liberty CRD, 4WD of course.
Normally, you would shift the transfer case while you are rolling along at low speed.
And obviously, there isn't going to be rolling along at any speed while stuck in a ditch.

I've had the vehicle for quite some time now, but no one has ever been able to explain to me how to do this.
Additionally, it is highly advised not to shift while under power (read go pedal depressed, at all).

My background is pickup trucks with manual clutch everything, including manual lock-out hubs.
I find the manual method easy, straight forward, and simple. And you always know what is engaged and what is not.

So how do you get into 4WD in a Liberty when the vehicle is unable to be "rolling along"?

You can put the transmission into N to take the pressure off the drive train, then shift to full/part time 4wd hi. Put it back in drive and slowly let your foot off the brake. You might feel/hear the engagement once the transmission engages again. It may not be as smooth as if you were moving, but it should work just fine. Just be easy on the gas until you are sure you are actually in 4wd.

For the most part, it should be a non issue. I actually had this happen recently when I turned around off the side of the road and dropped my front end down a small decline. I couldn't go backwards in 2wd and couldn't go forward anymore. I put in 4wd with trans in N and did exactly as I said. Was smooth and I backed right up in 4wd.

When I bought my Liberty Sport many years ago nobody showed me how to operate the transfer case lever. I had to figure it out on my own.

I agree with BlueLghtning. To shift into 4WD Hi just let off the gas, press the brake and pull the lever up. 4WD Lo is different. I found that you have to press the brake, shift into Nuetral and pull the lever up all the way back.

Myself I often find it difficult to get out of a stuck in 4WD Lo. The wheels spin too fast.
4WD Hi may be a better choice.
