I don't make much use of the 4wd but from time to time in MD we need to use "part time 4wd" on our 02 Liberty. Unfortunately it stays stuck (no light) on part time and we can't make any stops half way and end up driving 30 miles at 50 mph on something in between part time and 2wd. I tried several things from going at 10 mph and then neutral and doing the same thing on reverse helps, I read many threads with tips for this situations, however, now I can hear a faint clclcl cling when driving and I know something in the TC isn't right. How hard is it to take them apart and fix this issue? can I do it with the TC still attached to the transmission, it looks like I can but never done one of this before. Any helps or tips REALLY appreciated.

First I'd check the CVs on both ends of the front drive shaft. The one closest to the Tcase has that recessed boot that fails/cracks and loses grease. There is a cheap kit available to fix it. That may be the cause of the clicking noise. I'm assuming you have the 231 Tcase or Command trac with no full time? Can't help much with the dissection of the Tcase. I have the full time option in my 242 case and use it frequently to keep things happy in there. Occasionally it will stick in Part time when going back to 2wd from FT or PT. No light I can just feel it. I usually just pop the throttle and it drops back into 2wd.

I will look for that kit, is it popular? To me it really feels like something inside the tc is touching and making the noise driving or coasting at speed (above 40 mph), it is faint but it is there. The tc on the Liberty has 2wd/Part Time/4wd/N/4wd Low. Thank You and anyone that can help.

Ok so I got under the jeep again and looked at all the cv and driveshaft boots, they all look good to me I tried to wiggle them and they are tight for a vehicle with 208k miles used mostly on 2wd except for a few miles once in a blue moon when I get on wet snow. I attached a few pictures for You guys to look at maybe I'm missing something obvious to someone else.
One thing I'm not sure about, when the TC is in 2wd and the vehicle is parked, if I try to turn the front driveshaft is it supposed to be tight or turn? I only know fords the NP205 for example, will allow the front driveshaft to turn freely when on 2wd but this jeep TC doesn't allow me to turn it freely when in 2wd and the vehicle parked, does that make sense?

I'm about to take the TC apart but I'd like to have a text that will guide me a little, My wife drives this one and I don't want to put it down unnecessarily. Thanks in advance to everyone for any help.

Your last photo shows the rubber boot on the rear cv of your front driveshaft is gone. (Transfer case end) The innards of the cv are exposed to grit and grime and have become rusty - you shouldn't be able to see into it like that. There should be a rubber boot that holds in a lot of grease there, so 99% sure this is your issue. Don't take apart your transfer case!!!

Here is the how to thread for fixing it for about $55. (Just did this on my KK last month at 120,000 miles.)

Yes this does makes sense. Not super sure about the NP205 you mentioned but maybe the Fords in question had manual or automatic locking hubs. My 98 Ranger had vacuum actuated hubs so you could unlock the hubs and the front "axles" and driveshaft would be free if in 2wd. The KJ has permanently locked hubs so everything is turning all the time. When you shift the Tcase to 2wd you aren't putting power to the front but it all still rotates.

Thank You guy and thanks for stopping me, I was ready to pull the back of that tc today. I didn't know what it was supposed to look like, to me that DS looked fine but I see what You are saying. I ordered this one here http://www.driveshaftparts.com/index.ph ... uct_id=978 it looks like a straight forward job, can I pull the DS now and drive it with out it until the part arrives?

Yes. Just don't put it in 4wd with the shaft out. :wink:

I put in the new bearing and for a little while it sounded as if it was a little stiff or too tight but now it got much better. They have two kit one says Jeep and the other says Liberty but they both work. Here are the pictures I took.
