Post subject:  bullbar build!

so i recently picked up a 06 kj 3.7 for real cheep. i want to do some stuff to it and starting out i want to put a bull bar on it. the problem is i don't want to spend a bunch on a flimsy one. i am a very capable welder and machinist. my only problem is how to mount it... :banghead: any pictures on mounting locations/ideas?

Start with a detours backbone. Thats my summer project, building a bumper around it. Probably a few more mounting points on the sides but the detour is more than capAble with a winch so i figured its a good starting point

Have you tried pulling up the instructions for mass produced bull bars and copying the mounts? Here is a link for the one I have sitting in my shed.

I don't see how it's mounted there are a few holes but nothing you can get a wrench in. Would post pictures but don't know how.... :banghead:

Check out the fabrication section.
Also, this might offer some clues http://detoursusa.com/kjbackbone_install.php

Use the four holes a long the bottom of the unibody and dremel the, out to accept 1/2" bolts.
I did that and cut two more half inch holes on top.

See those two large holes in the steel frame below the grille?
Cut them open and enlarge them a bit. 10-12 inches of 2 inch OD square steel tube fits perfectly in there.
And there are already bolt holes. So once you figure out how much you need sticking out, drill holes and bolt them in. Those are now your mounts. Build your bumper from there.

With the bumper skin off, you'll see some slots where you can slip bolts in they go do into the bull bumper. You beef them up by putting a rectangular piece of steel in there with holes in it so it bites a lot more of the flimsy frame than just a bolt heads worth. Sandwich the frame, or at least that's how I saw one bull mounted.

I have the Westin mounts in the garage somewhere, I'll try to find them & take a picture of them for reference. They attach to the frame using flat bar with bolts welded to them. They slip into preexisting holes in the frame similar to the M bolts they use to attach the OEM tow hooks.
