I have this issue with my 02 liberty when driving in traffic and coming to a stop the brakes grab as if I just put a lot of pressure on the pedal and it is particularly worrying when the roads are wet. I tried so far bleeding the front brake lines, backing off the shoes on the rear drums. I have done brakes on this vehicle for years and never a problem, the only thing I did before this but may not be at the same time the problem started is I ordered new rotors and pads on ebay since the old ones were bad and I also ordered new calipers at the same time. Any ideas? Many Thanks in advance. |

Do you notice any heat or smell from the front brakes after some driving? Calipers can get "sticky" with age i.e. beginning to seize up. I had it happen with a rear caliper. |

No smell and the calipers were installed new, the problem presents itself when I press the brake pedal it grabs too much, I even tried backing out the shoes in the back. Thanks. |

Do you have ABS? If so maybe try pulling the fuse and see if it still does it. If it doesn't then try cleaning the wheel sensor a bit and re-bleeding the new calipers too. Just because they are new doesn't mean the pistons can't stick. I've put a few "new" things on that didn't work too well. |

I hear you there, I will try doing what you say though I have already re-bleed the front calipers but the abs fuse and wheel sensor I have not done yet. Is the ABS fuse on the in cab fuse panel? Oh btw the airbag light is ON after I took it to the dealer for a recall, I think they forgot to connect something there, would that make any difference. Thanks. |

The ABS pump fuse should be in the PDC under the hood. I think it is a 40A (big) fuse. That should inactivate the system and probably give you an ABS warning light on the cluster. Sometimes these things can be tricky to bleed due to the ABS and the extra plumbing. If everything you check is okay then I'd take it to a dealer and have them check and bleed it. There is a protocol for doing this and they can scan it for any specific issues that a DIYer can't get on a basic scanner. I recently replaced my front brake lines and didn't have any issues so yours may be an issue with the master cylinder or proportioning valve too. The airbag light is unlikely to cause issues. I had the first recall done (jumper harness) and have had my light on before and after but only when the temp is above about 40-45 degF. I haven't gone in for the module replacement recall yet. |

Does the Liberty have a brake booster? I remember a story that one of my friends told me about her Camaro doing just that. She would come up to a stop sign and gently brake but they locked up like when you stomped on the pedal. It turned out that there was a diaphragm somewhere in the booster system that had a pin hole in it and that was causing the problem. |
