Tim, the broken rocker is likely the result of a slipped timing belt. The engine is an 'interference' engine which means a slipped timing belt causes the valves to collide with the pistons. To mitigate some of the potential damage, the engine is designed with rockers which will 'snap off' or fail and possibly save the piston(s) and/or valves. IMO the head should be removed to fully assess the damage. |

I bet it's a good engine. I pull every head, and have the machine shop pressure test both combustion chamber and water jackets, and I get them milled smooth. They'll test the valves, and might as well grind them at that mileage. Then put it back together with ARP head studs, and all new rockers. Should go another 200k easy. New timing set with water pump also. Any other route begs for a whole lot of wasted labor. Once you pull the head you'll know if it dropped a valve, but that's rare. |
