Guys,

Can anyone shed some brake light on my issue?

1. All fuses check OK
2. Switch is OK in that the third tail light over the spare tire works
3. Both LH & RH bulbs burn when removed from the socket and then bench tested.

I say the switch is OK from the standpoint that the third light is burning. Maybe the switch send current to the third light and LH & RH light in a different circuit?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

Do you have wiring for trailer brakes? The fault might be in that harness.

Use a voltmeter to make sure you have continuity to ground.

Flash,

This one has no trailer tow package.
Do you agree that my switch is OK in that the third brake light is burning?
Outside of downloading the wiring diagram is there a simple continuity test to check for ground?

Thanks,

Tom

I too would assume the switch is ok. But could be wrong.

Well, one of the two pins in the bulb socket should connect to ground. So do a continuity test between each pin and some metal part connected to the frame. This is done with the key off.
One of the pins should have continuity to ground.
You can also do voltage checks between the pins. This is done with the key on and someone pushing the brake pedal.

Are the bulbs dual filament? I cant remember.
If so, there will be 4 pins in the socket.

According to the factory wiring diagram 8W-51-4,
the third brake light is on the same power circuit (+) as the corner brake lights, but they do have different grounds (-). Third brake light is on grd. G303, both corner brake light bulbs are on the same ground circuit, G304 (8W-15-18)

According to the WD (8W-15-18), the rear license plate lamps, and the rear power outlet are use the same ground circuit as the corner brake lights..
So check these other items and see if they are working OK, if not you have a ground problem..

WD as follows:
Red is power to bulbs, green is ground to bulbs...

Thanks WW & Flash.

This forum is a wealth of knowledge.
I appreciate you both.

No sir. The problem still remain

Finding a good auto electrician in my part of NC is a challenge.
I wish I had better news to report.

I had a similar problem, turned out to be the wiring loom under the drivers seat , wore through the wires and shorted a bunch of stuff.Cost a grand to get it all sorted out.25 bucks in parts the rest in labor.

Tom,

I did some testing today.

I have voltage at the canon plug going to the assembly on the correct pins. But I do not have voltage at the socket.

When I pulled the bulbs out, the sockets were very toasty. It is obvious they overheated. I have a hypothesis that I melted or some how destoryed the brake socket contacts in the rear light assembly through over heating.

I have no way to test this without getting another assembly. I am headed to the U-pull it tomorrow to see if I can find one. If you have a volt meter Or someone that can help you, may want to give it a shot.
