Last weekend i replaced my wheel bearings after i was getting some noises that sounded alot like they were going out. I was getting some humming noises around 30-40 almost like an out of balance tire with no vibrations. After installing my timken units and rotating my tires the noise is still there. Could this be a cv axle going out?

take your front driveshaft out, (fairly easy and free if it doesn't have a result), and see if the noise is still there

Have you checked the oil in the front differential?

After changing my rear pinion and carrier bearings Jeep got a bunch quieter. No obvious play in the diff either despite 220,000km.... but backlash was nearing 0.015".

There's also bearings in the ends of the front axle housing. Mine were shot (along with intermediate shaft) around the time I first replaced the wheel bearings.

I'll check those out as soon as possible, thanks guys!
u2slow were the bearings in the front diff hard to replace?

just a matter of popping the seals and pulling them, seating the new ones and putting a new seal on nothing to it really, cv's gotta come out . etc

it'll piss you off
it might take 3 minutes total to R&R the outer bearings and seals for both sides combined
it's everything else on either side of those 3 mins

Nice, im gonna start narrowing it down like you said, jeepinjarhead, with the front shaft. I've got an econo-shartmobile as my work car so the lib just sits for the weekend. I'll prob start tomorrow after work

Do you think its possible to get the cvs out without removing the steering knuckle by taking off the wheel hub?
Just seems like hub removal was easier than all of the other stuff. Or could that risk damaging the axle seals??

i dont think its big enough to clear the outer bells

a good 3lb hammer and that knuckle comes right off :)

Ok, so i took the front prop shaft out, drove around today and no noises. Does that mean i need to get the shaft joint rebuild kit?

yeah, there's a link around here somewhere for a rebuild kit for the front shaft, pretty common deal

it'll say something like "best rebuild kit for the front driveshaft" and tommudd saying something like "Ahh yesss, ahh yess, i have 5 of these preciouses in my garage" lol
