Post subject:  2005 crd lazy acceleration
Having a problem with 05 crd lazy acceleration, black smoke, and poor fuel economy. It acts like it is starving for air. I have changed air filter, boost hoses, pressure tested cooler, check vacuum control for geometry , and had turbo rebuilt. I do have green diesel tuning (hot & econ ). Also had injectors check. Took timing cover off to see if the belt may have slipped a notch. NO codes. If anyone has a idea of I have going on I would appreciate advice. thanks

Disconnect your CAC-to-INTAKE hose at the CAC end.
Have someone power brake it a bit while you watch / feel the turbo-to-CAC hose. (From the side, not the front...)

You should have a HUGE amount of air coming out of the CAC, and no swelling at all in the hose between the turbo and CAC.

If it swells the turbo-to-CAC hose or makes any pressure you can feel at all, it's likely that the oil passed from the turbo to the CAC in the turbo's previous lifetime (before being rebuilt) has coated much of the inner passages of the CAC and begun to block them off.

You've tested for pressure leaks, but from the sounds of it, Not tested the Blo for Flo.

Could be a gunked up or bad MAP sensor.
Could also be a stuck open EGR valve.

Installing a boost gauge can help with diagnosis.
Or, get a ELM327 ODB bluetooth adapter and run TorquePro on your Android phone/tablet to see live sensor readings.

Sounds like you are loosing most of your boost.
Make sure you got all the vacuum hoses connected back up on the turbo variable vane controller and vacuum reservoir on top of the right hand fender.
The boost controller solenoid could also be bad not letting vacuum get to the turbo VV dashpot on the turbo. Just make real sure you got everything vacuum and electrical connected back up properly.

You can also bypass the vacuum solenoid for the turbo VV controller, see this thread on how to test:> viewtopic.php?f=5&t=70602&p=757348&hilit=boost+solenoid#p757348

Also and Flash said, if you still have EGR valve in place, it could be stuck open or partly open and you are loosing boost backwards through it. :banghead:
If you still have the EGR valve in the circuit, you can rule it out by simply installing a simple block off plate.

Sorry its been so long to report back, been working out of town. The cac is not restricted, what able to build 34 psi with good flow. The egr has been deleted, and the vacuum solenoid is working. Was able to borrow a DBR III from a friend, still no codes.

Does it idle evenly or does it lope like a cylinder or 2 is weak or misfiring?

If everything else seems ok then you might have some broken rocker arms.

It idles smooth, the only thing I can add is the exhaust has heavy soot. Will spot floor just accelerating. Does anyone think the intake ports could be stopped up? Or cams wore down?

A smooth idle would make me look to the injectors.

A rocker would make a detectable sound you could hear, as the affected cylinder would
breathe differently than the others. (unless All the rockers are identically affected)

If the tips are damaged or they are worn enough to degrade the spray pattern,
the fuel will not burn completely, resulting in low power and black smoke.

You may be able to narrow this down to one cylinder if you do a cylinder drop test. With a good tester, (DRBIII is the best) you can drop one cylinder at a time, and observe which one makes the unburnt fuel go away.

IF (and I hope not) you got a tank of bad fuel, and your existing fuel filter didn't catch enough of it, you could have a whole set of bad injectors. This would be indicated in the black smoke continuing no matter which cylinder is dropped out.
