What gears? Is it on upshifts or getting moving. Define "cold," what outside temps are we talking... 50-60F or minus 30F?

Check fluid level, color of fluid, and smell it!!! IF color is dark or black looking and / or smells burnt smelling, *service transmission!
Fluid should be a bright to crimson red and have no burnt smell to it!

If it is low or slightly below full mark, add some fluid till it is slightly over the full mark. These transmissions are happiest when slightly overfilled.
Also, try placing transmission in neutral for 10-15 seconds after you first start it. This lets the pump get everything pumped up good before placing transmission in "R" or "D".

I actually place mine in "N" now when I first start it for ~10 seconds before putting it in "D" and driving off. It has become a habit and I do it with my Jeep and both of my Dodge trucks...

*take it to a good transmission shop and let them service the transmission, changing out the fluid and filters...be sure and use good quality filters and not some el cheapo brand! Make sure to use ATF+4 fluid.
Or you can service the transmission yourself; same rules apply!
