Post subject:  Solved: MIL Light on, losing power

OK, had a mystery on a recent trip to Canada with our 2005 Liberty CRD. Filled up diesel in the US before crossing the border and not 15 miles later the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) came on. As we continued northwards, the jeep showed definite signs of losing power-- bogging down heavily on hills. We were towing our T@B trailer-- 1500 lbs-- but we'd never had any problems before. I suspected we had gotten a bad batch of diesel, so tried some Diesel Klean with no effect. We fought this beast up and down hills and finally pulled into a Chrysler dealer in northern BC. They pulled a bunch of codes, but couldn't figure out what they were seeing, so they reset it and told us to come back on Monday (3 days later). We had no problems for 50 miles, but then the MIL came back and we were back in "no power mode". Finally, we said screw it and limped home and took the Jeep to our local mechanic. To my surprise, the answer he found was "rodents": we had had a mouse that took a liking to the Air box and filter and made a nice nest in there. When we started pushing the engine, the turbo sucked the nest into the exit from the air box and clogged the airflow and the MAP sensor-- the result was we were starving the CRD for air. He replaced the filters, cleaned the injectors, and we are back in business. Now how to put a screen up to keep the mice out of our Jeep!

I don't understand how the mouse could have gotten through the steel screen that holds the filter in place, but that doesn't answer your question, or help solve your problem..

Really the only way a mouse could get in is through the cold air tube going from behind (beside) the right headlight to the airbox. If you take that tube out, there's a pretty natural place you can fit a carefully cut, thin expanded metal mesh such as the one that comes with an OEM filter. Just cut it a little big, and press it into the notch forward of the round end of this "tube". Even if they manage to get into the airway tube, they can't get past the screen and into the air filter box.
