Whats everyones take on sealing the trans pan. Are you using rtv or a rubber gasket. Just tapped a stripped bolthole to fix a minor leak and kinda bent the pan lip taking it off. Leaked after "straightening" with rtv. Got a new pan on the way and wanted everyones opinions.

My method with transmission pans has always been...

1. If available, use a rubberized gasket instead of plain cork
2. Use rtv to stick the gasket to the pan
3. Smear a thin coat of oil over the gasket surface that will meet the trans. This will help keep the gasket from sticking.
4. Gently tighten the pan bolts with a 1/4 drive ratchet by hand. Do not over tighten. If you split the gasket it will never stop leaking.

If done right, the next time you pull the pan off, the gasket will come off cleanly with the pan and can be re used. No scraping off of the old gasket or rtv.

For Chrysler's use ATF safe RTV only, the dealer stuff works very good. The trans case is not machined for a gasket.

X2

If you're re-using the pan that has had RTV on it before, clean it with RTV sealant dissolver.

or equivalent.
