For What It's Worth.
The tailgate lock stopped locking/unlocking and upon further checking I found that the actuator gears stripped. After watching a Youtube video (USA) of a similar problem with a recommended solution, I got a secondhand Left Rear Passenger door lock (complete with actuator) from a scrapyard. The actuator is held in place by two screws. I swapped the tailgate lock to the "new" actuator and installed. Works 100%.
New tailgate lock at dealer is R 3, 500.00 ($262.00) and I got the "replacement" for R 450.00 ($34.00).
The only "mod" I made was to remove the red locking tab for the rear door linkage. I made sure that the replacement lock was from a donor with central locking.
