Hello folks, this question is mostly dedicated to 2002 KJ (Liberty) owners. Now the question:

Has anybody tried/seen mounting an appropriate winch under a stock bumper? I am looking for one with adequate power, yet not excessive (8k - 10k pulling power), which can be hidden under the bumper (due to state regulations and laws).

Any suggestions?

You may could fab one up on your own. Have never seen a commercial version for sale like you want. All I have ever seen is external, sets on top or in front of bumper.
Keep in mind, there is not a lot of room behind bumper!
Some of the UTV winches are pretty compact but have decent capacity.
You may can find one of them that would fit, but would still require some hand built brackets for mounting.

The Warn on my Polaris Ranger is a lot tougher than I thought it would be. Pulled some real heavy loads with it.

You could always fab up a discrete hitch receiver at the front bumper, and use a hitch mount winch from front or rear, and carry it inside, so it wouldn't cause overloading of the front springs.

What they said. A custom winch mount is your best option. You can ask help from a local fab shop. Check out also the Smittybilt winches. They are reliable and not too pricey compared to Warn.

Somebody here had a Detours Backbone winch mount for sale.

That's probably the most discreet winch mount I've seen.

Their site is down though. Looks like they're in process of recovering from Irma.
