Hey guys,
im living in nyc and my job requires driving around alot with my own car to client address, since the winter coming soon im looking
to buy some AWD that i can also use a bit at weekend on the off road for some fun. :JEEPIN:
so i thought to buy Liberty CRD, but since im in nyc i cant really find them around in good condition or in fair price.
now i have found few 3.7 gas version in nice condition but i heard few opinions some are good some are bad, most complains are about fuel economy and lack of power, what would be the smarter decision?
should i wait and try to find CRD or i should buy gas version ? keep in mind it will be a daily driver

The 3.7L with the 6-speed manual has decent power and mileage, IMHO.

Nothing wrong with gassers at all , own 3 and have over 235,000 on one of them
Wouldn't own a CRD

I'm a CRD owner and love them (except when I hate them) and I would NOT suggest one for your situation. I have a serious problem with people who buy small diesel vehicles for city use expecting to get awesome mileage and a million miles out of the engine. What you actually get is "meh" mileage because you're not working it in its ideal range and a massively increased nitrous oxide output which makes hyper-environmentalists hate diesels even more than they already do. You'll also roast your engine well before its time because of the increased soot production from the stop and go driving. Cities are the worst place to own/operate a diesel. Get the gas version if you want a Liberty, for sure.

If you needed more motivation NOT to get a CRD, they are a huge investment in time and money to get "up to snuff" if they haven't been cared for properly and are prone to a lot of problems that will make you tear your hair out if you aren't very patient and willing to do a lot of your own wrench turning. Truly a hobbyist vehicle.

The CRD works for me because I have a 20 mile one-way commute every day at highway speeds, occasionally tow fairly heavy trailers/vehicles, and I also spend a decent amount of time torquing it offroad. The distance-per-tank is great but you really need to be doing with it what diesels were made to do to see any benefit from it.

FWIW, not all KJs have AWD. Only the ones with the 242J tcase (Select-trac) have a full-time mode. I just got done swapping ours over.

I have two CRD's. 2005 and 2006. Ive had nothing but good experiences with both. Not all CRD owners say that. Ive been lucky. Ive gotten 40mpg twice on highway road trips. I love the MPG. :goink:

Unless you are familiar with Diesel vehicle operation, maintenance, and repair, and how and why it differs from spark ignition engines, I recommend you avoid the CRD.
I love mine, but unless you can competently do the work yourself, the cost of having a shop do it would be very high. For reasons, not the least of which is it's very hard to find a shop / service center that has any knowledge or experience with them.
Heck it's almost impossible to find a Dealership that even knows Jeep put diesels in Liberties.
EDIT: If you can afford it, a V6 Ecodiesel powered Jeep would be a much better choice.

And even if you are diesel-savvy, electronic ones may not be right for you. :dizzy:
