I just picked up this CRD a few weeks ago and I have been going through it trying to take care of all the outstanding issues.

I have a noise that I can hear in the cab after I get above 40MPH. It only happens when accelerating, if I let off the fuel pedal the sound immediately goes away.

I captured videos with my camera mounted on the front and rear of the vehicle, the sound was only captured while pointed towards the rear differential.

Before capturing this video I replaced all 4 tires, both front wheel bearings, front axle CV joint (closest to transfer case), both rear drive shaft U joints.

The noise existed before making the repairs listed above. Also this vehicle has a 2.5 inch lift.

Any clue on what this noise could be coming from?

Here is a video of the issue:

Sounds like a bad bearing somewhere in the rear axle.
Removing the rear diff cover and inspecting the gear teeth is a good place to start.
Also grabbing the pinion yoke and trying to move it up and down will tell you if it's pinion bearings.

Thanks for the insight. I pulled the cover off and to me it looks like I have too much slop in the spider gears. The pinion seems tight without any play.

Any metal chunks or glitter in the oil?
You may need new spider gears.
And when you pull the axles, might be a good idea to replace the axle bearings too.

I didn't find any metal in the oil or on the magnet. The axle bearings and carriers bearings to me seemed tight. I was not able to detect any play.

I did end up replacing the spider gears, the truck came with some new ones in a box so I tossed them in while I was in there. The rear brakes were shot and the driver side parking shoes were seized. I ended up replacing the parking shoes/hardware, rotors, and pads.

I filled the rear end up with 75w-140 synthetic gear oil along with a 4 oz bottle of friction modifier. I can still here the sound so it possible one of the bearings is bad but does not have any play yet. I recently replaced a loud wheel bearing on a mazda that had zero play but was very loud.

I'm going to order up some new axle/wheel bearings and carrier bearings and give it another shot soon.

Thanks for the help so far.

Without pulling all the actual bearings and inspecting the rollers and races you may not be getting the whole story!
Especially the pinion bearings which the noise you described could well be a bad pinion bearing. Seen this many times before!
But unfortunately without any discernible play found in a bearing, the only proper way to truly inspect them is to pull them and look at the races and rollers...

I just placed a part order this morning. I am going to rebuild the entire rear end.

I have been chasing this exact same problem for about a year now. I have done everything you have done with the exception of any internal diff inspection.

I would like to know if you have fixed the problem as you stated in your last post that you were going to take the diff apart and replace the needed parts.

I just recently replaced the rear carrier in my Jeep with a new Dana Trac-Loc posi unit. I installed new carrier bearings and new axle bearings & seals (axle bearings requires inside slide hammer puller), pulled pinion bearings, inspected rollers and races and they were great shape so I did not replace them, only the pinion seal was replaced.

Rear end had a slight audible whine in it at cruising speeds before rebuild. It would change pitch when slightly turning from left to right which was an indicator to me of a carrier bearing issue.

Set backlash at 0.005 and preloaded pinion and carrier bearings as required.
After rebuild, no noise, all is quiet at speed, whine is completely gone...

So do think it was the carrier bearings or the axle bearings (how did they look)? One of the places I took my Jeep to said that after removing the rear driveshaft (and plugging the TC tail shaft so fluid wouldn't escape), the vibration was gone. He also noticed excessive resistance in rotating the rear wheels due to possibly a Trac-Loc issue??
