Good evening,

Quick question, would anyone know if the stock roof bars can handle 175 lbs or so of load on a rack?

I have to install a Curt roof rack but would love to know the limits of the stock bars. Here is a pic of what I have. Image

I doubt the strength of the bars is the whole equation.

100 Kgs in the back is no big deal. Just the mother-in-law riding in the back seat.

Take same said mother-in-law and strap her to the roof, and you've just raised your vertical balance point significantly, which will dramatically change vehicle handling, especially at highway speeds or uneven ground.

Looks like it is 150 lbs.?

From the Jeep Manual:

ROOF LUGGAGE RACK
External racks do not increase the total load carrying capacity of the vehicle. Be sure that the total occupant and luggage load inside the vehicle, plus the load on the luggage rack, do not exceed the rated vehicle capacity as shown on the label attached to the drivers door shut face.

CAUTION!
• To avoid damage to the roof rack and vehicle, do not exceed the maximum roof rack load capacity of 150 lbs. (68 kg) or 65 lbs. (29.5 kg) on Renegade models. Always distribute heavy loads as evenly as possible and secure the load appropriately.
• Long loads which extend over the windshield, such as wood panels or surfboards, should be secured to both the front and rear of the vehicle.
• Place a blanket or other protection between the surface of the roof and the load.
• Travel at reduced speeds and turn corners carefully when carrying large or heavy loads on the roof rack. Wind forces, due to natural causes or nearby truck traffic, can add sudden upward loads. This is especially true on large flat loads and may result in damage to the cargo or your vehicle.

At one point when finances permit it I would like to have a rooftop tent. I am not sure what type of bars I have.... please see picture above to see if it's the standard or renegade bars?.... could the renegade model be the ones with the plastic basket above the rack ?

I have seen three roof rail upgrades the past couple of years but the owners were not there to ask about where they purchased or how the new roof rails were performing. They are not as pretty as you have to destroy the plastic cover on the roof but beefier rails would add increased rollover protection I would think. :JEEPIN:
