Is there any way to check the automatic transmission fluid level on a 2007 Liberty 3.7L 4x4?
I'm in New Mexico about 7500' elevation and the mornings are 45-60 degrees cool. When I start out the transmission doesn't seem to go into gear (drive) for a few seconds. After a few miles everything is ok.
Could this be a shift linkage? Doesn't seem so since it is ok after a few miles once everything is warmed up.
Low fluid? Can I check it? The tube has the plug for dealer service and I don't want to break it by forcing it. Is there even a dipstick there?
Thanks!

I"m not sure at what point they addressed the pump / checkvalve problem, but my 2006 does the same thing.

Drop the trans to N before starting, and start it there. Try that before putting in more fluid, but it probably wouldn't hurt if the tube is unplugged.

I usually take a slow-to-engage transmission as a sign that the trans filter needs changing.

Thanks for the suggestions. We're traveling now, towing the Jeep behind the motorhome.
I'll plan to have the tranny serviced once we get back home.
Interestingly it hasn't done that the last few days....

The same symptoms happened to mine after the last time the fluid was changed and was mistakenly underfilled. On cold mornings I was able to back out of my driveway, put it in gear and drive to the bottom of the street. But upon stopping at the stop sign it would take a few seconds to get any more forward motion. It felt like the tranny was in neutral even though it was in gear. After it warmed up it would be fine all day until the next cold morning. I think the fluid expands when warm and when it's low (or unavailable because of a dirty filter) it's not enough to get the job done. After they re-checked the fluid level and topped it off, it was fine.
