Post subject:  06 Jeep Liberty 147k Intermittent Codes

I have a jeep liberty that throws a ton of intermittent codes and when the dash lights up like a christmas tree of course Cruise Control does not work etc. The motor runs cool it performs fine in every other way. It throws codes such as improbable vehicle information incorrect VIN rear wheel speed sensor low voltage condition. The sensors themselves test fine even though a code shows bad. Back out of the drive way all dummy lights go out and all is great with the universe 50 miles or so and all codes are back.

I have had it to two shops one says the problem is the splines that the rear wheel sensors read on both sides a ridge / tooth is missing and that both rear axles need to be replaced to a tune of $700.00 a side. I would agree that this could cause an ABS code but it should not cause all the other codes.

Second shop did some tracing said its an electrical problem somewhere in the vehicle one they are unable to fix but they have no further explanation.

I am taking it to a third shop on Tuesday to get a third opinion.

I have a list of all the specific codes it throws written down somewhere I'll update with those later none of the codes are actually legit though so I'm guessing it won't help.

My bet is a voltage problem. Fluctuating power will cause the computer modules to freak like chickens in a cage with a hawk outside.
I would start at the battery and check/tighten all local ground wires first, then check the positive connectors as you follow the harnesses.
If not a bad battery, check the power wire to the alternator for looseness.
I would next start hunting down body/frame ground points. At the same time look for wires with compromised insulation where they contact basically anything.
Less likely but also possible is a corroded or dirty wire harness connector.

You didn't mention if it were a diesel or gasser. That will make a difference in folks' ability to help.

The vibration of the diesel will increase the possibility for shorts and grounds through compromised insulation.
double check the battery connectors are tight, and making good contact AT BOTH ENDS
I still think it's more likely to be a corroded or loose ground though. there are 3 in the close vicinity of the ABS unit (right below the master cylinder) One on the engine/wiper-blower firewall under the hood seal, one below the battery, and one below the LT headlight.

I agree completely.
Make sure and check the ground underneath the battery tray toward front grille. This one is not in the service manuel.
Other most common place is bundle of wires behind the fuel head mount.

Good Luck!!

As I already have an appointment to have it looked at I will point this out to the Mechanic to check all the grounds. Thank you.

These are pictures of two of the grounds mentioned that should be checked closely for good conductivity!
First picture is the one under the left front headlamp on top of the inner fender. Second one is located on the firewall over the brake booster.

So far we have narrowed it down and believe it is the connector that the speed sensor plugs into right there behind the wheel. No lights what so ever except the under boost and EGR limited flow but I plan on having all vacuum and turbo hoses checked / replace and doing the EGR delete tune. Separate topic on that.

I took the little bad connector into the shop that told me I needed a whole new axle and told them, "Here is your 1400.00 new axle and $25.00 part needed replaced.
