My headlights operate differently when the engine is running versus with the engine off.

While the engine is on, the headlight switch operates the headlights normally: rotate one click forward for parking lights, another click forward for headlights on. And the same rotating the switch backwards through parking lights to off.

While the engine is off, turning the headlights on seems normal, but turning them off: one click backward to parking lights, another click backward to headlights on. I have to rotate the switch one click forward for headlights back off, then one click backward and they stay off.

Puzzling.

Dean.

This may simply be your headlamp delay off feature in operation!
From memory: you must turn the headlamps OFF before turning the ignition switch to off.
If you turn the ignition switch to off before turning the headlamps off, the headlamps will remain on for whatever period of time you have them set to remain on.

From the Jeep Liberty's owner manual: wrote:
Customer Programmable Features
Press the MENU button until one of the display choices
following appears:

Headlamp Delay
When this feature is selected the driver can choose, when
exiting the vehicle, to have the headlamps remain on for
30, 60, or 90 seconds, or not remain on. Pressing the STEP
button when in this display will select 30, 60, 90, or OFF

I agree, this is probably what is going on. You can adjust it in the EVICs(overhead display)

Oooohhh. Headlight delay auto off.

Thanks WWDiesel and mass-hole,

I've newer owned a vehicle that the headlights stayed on for a time. I'll watch it next opportunity.

Various posts and articles have mentioned the data center and overhead display, but my overhead console only has the courtesy light, no data stuff. Maybe this is hardwired?

Dean.

Checked the Headlight Delay Auto Off function today. It worked. Went into a convenience store and the lights were off when I came back out. Did not check the timing, but I'll check it soon.

Thanks for the guidance everyone!

Dean.
